Wheels for Harvesters, &c.

BENJAMIN e. TURNER,v 0E EEEMoNT, NEEEA's-KA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,758, dated January 12, 17875; applieaion'til'ed i Deember 26, 1874.
Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. TENER, of Fremont, in the county of Dodgel audState of Nebraska, have invented a 'new and u seful Improvement in Wheels for Harvesters, Trucks, 85e.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ,exact description of the invention, sueh as 'will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Vwhich form part ofy Ythis speeteation.
Figure l is a vertical section of my im-V proved wheel, taken through the line of its axis; Fig. 2, a side-view; Fig. 3, a sectional view of hub detached, showing its journal arranged t0 revolve on hollow pivot.
Like. letters in both iigures'of the drawings indicate. like parts.
This invention relates to the elassv of wheels having a double set ot' inclined spokes Aand double hubs; and its Objectis, in tightening the spokes to strengthen the wheel, to draw in each set ot' spokes equally and si|m1ltaue ously, so as not to disturb the properadjustmentor set-ot' the wheel, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. ,y
A A are the double set of inclined spokes;
ll l,.thedouble hubs, made with journalsa e.-
lhe inner sides ofthe hubs are provided with radial mortises to receive the spokes, which are seemed by plates riveted to the hubs over the mortises. The spokes, however, may be attaehed to the hubs in any other suitable manner. l
"lhe hubs are connected together by a eentral rod, (l, having right and left hand serewthreads on its ends arranged to pass through rings c e, supported by radial arms on the inside ot" the hubs, the ,purpose ot' which is to allow thenir to pass freely through the liubs, to keep theirjournals eool while revolving in the boxes, and at the same time t'orm bearrlhe rod (.l made square in the center, or in sueh a manner that a wrench can be applied thereto to turn the rod, so that in tightening the spokes to strengthen the wheel, the spokes will be drawn in equallyand simultaneously, and thus not disturb the proper adjustment ot' the wheel.
If preferable, the rings iu the hubs may beA provided with 'screw-threads, and the serewnuts thus dispensed with; also, the journals ot' the hubs may be swung on hollow pivots D, and the journal-boxes thus dispensedwith, the pivots being made hollow to-reeeive and allow a free playto the projecting vends of the rod during the revolution of the wheel.
rlhis wheel is especially adapted t'or use in a harvester, wheelbarrow, truek, or other similar olass of machinery, as it can be provided with a broad i'elly or band tol seeure easy locomotion', and therequisite strength obtained to sustain such a wheel.
I am aware that a central rod or spindle has beeuused; but the objection to thatis, that it is constructed so that each set ot' spokes ofthe wheel .cannot be drawn inequally and simultaneously toward the middle ot' its axis in tightening the wheehbuteaeh set oi' spokes has to be drawn in at a time; consequently Y there is a liability ot' the set or adjustment ot' the wheel being disturbed. In this invention the, spokes `are drawn in equally and simultaneously,ftoward the lmiddle ot' the axis ot' the wheel, thus olivi-ating entirely the objection above referred to.
` llaving thus fully described my inventio what I claim therein as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wheel having a double set of inclined spokes and double hubs, the central serew rod (J, in eombination with the inner rings or. bearings, c c, and serew-nutsd d, to draw iu p eaeh set.- oi spokes ot' the wheel 'equally and have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of December, 187i.
