ARTHUR HORTON, OI CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR LATCH.
Application filed May 11, 1925. Serial No. 29,536.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of this character, especially adapted for use on garage doors, which is strong and durable in use and may be readily operated to lock a garage door, or the like, in either open or closed position.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a front View of garage doors equipped with latches embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line H of Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprisesan arm 5 pivotally connected at one end with a bracket 6 secured to the door 7 as shown. At its other end the arm 5 is provided with a cylindrical socket 8 into which fits a cylindrical hub 9 on one end of an arm 10. The hub 9 is pivotally connected with socket 8 by a bolt 11. At its other end the arm 10 is pivotally connected with a bracket 12 secured to the under side of the upper sill 13 of the door frame. A spring latch bolt 14 is mounted on arm 5 and arranged to engage holes or sockets 15 provided in hub 9 to lock the arms 5 and 10 in various positions of angular adjustment.
A latch string 16 is connected with bolt 14 and passes downwardly through guide openings-17 in arm 5, being provided at its 1 end with a ring 18. Where two doors are employed one of the latches is applied to each door.
When the door is closed the bolt let engages one of the holes 15 and locks the door in closed position. To open the door the latch string 16 is pulled to withdraw the bolt, whereupon the door may be swung open, the arms 5 and 10 pivoting on each other as indicated in Fig. 2. The latch bolt 14- then engages one of the holes 15 and holds the door in. open position thus preventing accidental closing of the door by the wind or otherwise. The door may be readily closed by again withdrawing the latch bolt.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully illustrated and de-v scribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a door frame and a door hinged in said frame on a vertical axis to swing horizontally, of an arm pivoted on a vertical axis at one end on the frame to swing horizontally; an arm pivoted on a vertical axis at one end on the door to swing horizontally; a socket on one arm and a hub on the other arm rotatabl mounted in said socket; a spring held latch bolt on said socket arm, there being latch holes in said hub to receive said bolt; and a latch string secured to said bolt for releasing the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door frame and door hinged in said frame to swing horizontally, of a first arm pivoted at one end to the frame and provided at its other end with a cylindrical hub having a plurality of radial holes therein; a second arm pivoted at one end to said door and having a cylindrical socket at its other end to receive said iub; a spring latch bolt mounted on said second arm and projecting radially through said socket to engage the holes in said hub; and a latch string secured to said bolt for releasing the same, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a door frame and door hinged in said frame to swing horizontally, of a first arm pivoted at one end to the frame and provided at its other end with a cylindrical hub having a plurality of radial holes therein; a second arm pivoted at one end to said door and having a cylindrical socket at its other end to receive said hub; a spring latch bolt mounted on said second arm and projecting radially through said socket to engage the holes in said hub; and a latch string secured to said bolt for releasing the same, there being a guide opening in said second arm adjacent its pivoted end and said latch string depending through said guide opening, substantially as de scribed.
ARTHUR HORTON.
