IMPROVEMENT IN BAG- FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Paten tNo. 158,722, dated January 12,1875; application filed December 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MACPHAIL, of Laporte City, Black Hawk county, Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Fastener, of which the following is a Specification:
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved bag fastener as applied to a sack. Fig. 2 is a sectional top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the fastener detached from the bag.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to a simple and reliable bag-fastener, by which bags may be quickly and securely closed and rapidly opened and it consists of a fastening-string attached to the sack, passed in a loop through holes of an elastic disk and metal button, and secured by a knot to retain the disk and button in position, the string being then wound around the bag end, and securely fastened thereon by being wedged intermediately between disk and button.
A represents a sack or bag for grain, flour, or other purposes; and B, the fastening-string, which is secured by a leather or other washer, a, and knot 11 at the end, or otherwise, to the inside of bag A, to be securely connected thereto without chance of being torn out. The string Bis then passed through a hole of a disk, G, of rubber or similar elastic or rigid material, and through .a hole of' a metallic button, D, placed thereon, being returned through the button and disk by a second hole in each, so as to hold the same on the string by a loop-shaped portion of the same. A knot, d,- is formed in string B at the under side of disk 0, for retaining disk and button in the same relative position on the string.
The upper side of disk G, which is in contact with the button, is preferably ribbed or grooved, for the purpose of retaining the fastening-string firmly wedged between disk and button, after the same is wound around the upper end of the bag, and intermediately between the button and disk. The pressure of the disk, together with the tension of the string, binds the string part wound between the disk and button firmly therein, and furnishes thereby a secure, simple, and instantly applied and detached bag-fastening device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A bag-fastening composed of a fasteningstring attached to the bag, provided with a rigid or elastic disk, 0, and metal or other button D, as described, the string being applied around the bag and secured between the disk and button, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
