Further advantages and uses will lappear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings i1- lustrating by way of example the present preferred embodiment of the apparatus wherein Fig. 1 shows in plan view a support bearing a sensitized sur 4ace and a yieldable surace forming an e Ktension thereof.

rlhe upper face or surface of the rubber sheet 6`is so arranged that it forms in eect a continuation of the zinc plate surface for receiving and supporting such portion of a'printing frame 7 as may project from the zinc plate. This rubberv sheet 6 may either be placed in juxtapositionto a singleside or end of support 1 vor may be notched out and act as a boundary on two sidesv for a porl tion of the sensitized plate and its support. A principle object of the invention is to4 Any. sui-table formof vacuum frame may be used for printing from a photographic plate on to the-marginal portion of this sens'itized'k surface. l prefer a frame of the type which will have the negative secured thereto.- One type of such frame is shown `in Fig. 2 where the printing frame 7 is shown lyingl over adjacent portions of the sensitized plate 2 and the sheet or surface 6. A sealing member `8 cooperates with said frame 7 for sealing o' a space beneath said frame as defined by said seal 8. A photographic plate'lO may be attached to frame 7 by any suitable means such'as by a part 9 cemented to thenegative and slidable in a groove` 9', which allows plate 10 a relative movement with respect to a transparent .plate 18 which lies over plate l() and serves to press plate 10 down as will be hereafter described. This plate 18 is sealed to the frame 7 by rubber strips 19. A member such as 11 is connected to 7 and communi- Cates-with space 12 through which air may be exhauste from said space and likewise from spaces 13 and 14.
The apparatus of this inventionl and the method of operating the same apply particularly to that class of work wherein 1t is desired to print a portion of a photographicmeneer print from the photographic plate on to the sensitized surface. Where a portion only of such photographic plate is to be printed onto a ymarginal portion of said sensitized surface, great difficulty and inaccuracy have heretofore been experienced. By marginal portion is meant a portion bounded by one or more sides of said sensitized surface and less than the area of the printing` frame. lt will, therefore, be seen that, as shown in- Fig. '1, if it is desired to print from a photographic plate such as onto the marginal portion as defined by the dash lines 16 and 1'?, the frame 7 'Will project beyond the plate 2 and it Will be impossible to form an airtight seal with the sealing member 8 Without such means as is provided by this invention.
According to the present invention 1n e'ect supply an extension to that marginal portion of the sensitized surface to be printed upon so as to form a sealing seat for the vacuum frame and then place the negative and vacuum frame over the combined adjacent portions of the sensitized surface and said extension, seal the same in position and exhaust the air and force the negative` down on the combined adjacent surfaces.
'lhe operation of this apparatus is as follows. The sensitized plate 2 is placed on support 1 and the auxiliary frame 4 is secured in position adjacent the portion of 'the zinc plate to be printed upon. The mat 6 is then placed into juxtaposition With one or more sides of the sensitized surface so that the surface of 6 forms in effect a continuation of the surface 3, the combined surfaces forming 4a sufficient seat for the sealing member 8 operated in connection With and preferably carried by frame 7. Frame 7 is then placed over the desired adjacent portions of surfaces 3 and 6 with the photographic plate 10 interposed and preferably carried by said frame 7. The space 12 of frame 7 is then connected to an exhauster or vacuum pump by suitable means as 11 and the air is exhausted from spaces 12, 13 and 14, thus forcing the plate 18 downward and it in turn pressing photographic plate 10 into engagement with said covered surfaces. The printing is then done in the manner Well knoWn in the art.
Having thus described myinvention with particularity with reference to the preferred method of carrying out the same and in connection with the preferred apparatus for carrying out the same, it `will be obvious to those skilled in the art, afterunderstanding my invention, that other changes and modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope, of my invention, and I aim in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications as are Within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by lil.. -fietters Patent is 1. ln apparatus ofthe character described, the combination of a support for a sensitized surface, means operatively related theretoy forming an extension thereof and having a surface forming in effect a continuation of a portieri of the sensitized surface, a vacuum frame for printing from a photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface, means for sealing off from the atmosphere said portion of the sensitized surface and such part of the adjacent surface as coincides with said printing frame, and means of communication for exhausting the air from over the sealed off surfaces to force the photographic plate into contact with said portion of the sensitized plate.
2. ln apparatus of the character described, the combination of a support for a sensitized surface, means operatively related thereto forming an extension thereof and `having a yieldable surface forming in effeet a continuation of a portion of the sensitized surface, a vacuum frame for printing from a photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface, means for sealing off from the atmosphere said portion of the sensitized surface and such part of the adjacent surface as coincides with said printing frame, and means of communication for exhausting the air from over the sealed off surfaces to force the photographic plate into Contact with said portion of the sensitized plate.
3. ln apparatus of the character described the'combination of a support fora sensitized surface, means operatively related thereto, and a yieldable surface mounted on said means and forming in effect a continuation of a portion of the sensitized surface, a vacuum frame for printing from a photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface, means for sealing off from the atmosphere said portion of the sensitized surface and such part of the adjacent surface as coincides with said printing frame, and means of communication for exhausting the air from over the sealed off surfaces to force the photogra hic plate into contact with said portion o the sensitized plate.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a support for a sensitized surface, means operatively related thereto forming an extension thereof and having a surface forming in effect a continuation of a portion of the sensitized surface, a vacuum frame for printing from a photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface, means on said frame for holding a photographic plate, means for sealing oft' from the atmosphere said portion of the sensitized surface and such part of the adjacent surface as coincides with llO said printing frame, and means of communication for exhausting the air from over the sealed off surfaces to force the photographic plate into Contact With said p0rtion of the sensitized plate.
5. lin apparatus of the character described, the combination of a support for a sensitized surface, means operatively related thereto forming an extension thereof and having a surface forming in effect a continuation of a portion of the sensitized surface, said means bounding a portion of said sensitized plate on two sides, a vacuum frame for printing from a photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface, means for sealing off from the atmosphere said portion of the sensitized surface and such part of the adjacent surface as coincides with said printing frame, and means of communication for exhausting the air from over the Vsealed. off surfaces to force the photographic plate into contact with said portion of the sensitized plate.

The method of printing from a portion of a photographic plate onto a marginal portion of a sensitized surface, which comprises providing a surface adjacent said portion of the sensitized surface to form in e'ect a continuation of said portion of the sensitized surface for the purpose of accommodating that portion ofv a vacuum printing .frame Vand the photographic plate which projects beyond said portion of the sensi-l tized surface, sealing off from the atmosphere the portion of the sensitized plate and the portion of the extended surface covered `by said printing frame, exhausting the air from said sealed off space to force the photographic plate into engagement with said covered surfaces,y and printing from the photographic plate onto the corresponding marginal portion of the sensitized plate.
8. The method of printing from a portion of a photographic plate onto a portion of a sensitized surface which comprises placing a plane surface in juxtaposition to a part of said sensitized surface, so that said plane surface will form iny effect a continuation of a part of said sensitized surface and the combined surfaces present in effect a plane surface sufficient to accommodate said printing frame, placing a vacuum printing frame with sealing engagement upon adjacent poi'- tions of said sensitized surface and extension, exhausting the air from the sealed off space between said photographic plate and said combined surfaces to thereby force said photographic plate into printing engagenient with said sensitized surface, and printing from said photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface.
9. The method of printing .from a portion of a photographic plate onto a portion of a sensitized surface which comprises placing a yieldable surface in juxtaposition to a part of said sensitized'surface so that said yieldable surface will form in effect a ,continuation of a part of said sensitized surface for supporting a printing frame and the combined surfaces present in effect a surface suitable to accommodate said printing frame, placing a vacuum printing frame with sealing engagement upon adjacent portions of said sensitized surface and yieldable surface, exhausting the air from the sealed od space between said photographic plate and said combined surfaces to thereby force said photographic plate into printing engagement with said sensitized surface, and printing from said photographic plate onto said portion of the sensitized surface.
