My invention aims to provide a new and improved form of barrette for use to hold bobbed hair in orderly fashion at the sides of the head, the device being of such nature I as to prevent separation of strands of the hair, for instance, when leaning forwardly. With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the. novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing a ove briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a U-shaped spring which is preferably formed of a thin flat strip of metal bent into the proper shape. For future reference, one arm of the spring 1 is designated by the numeral 2 and the other arm of said spring is identified by the numeral 3. An elongated plate 4, preferabl formed of sheet meta, is secured by sol ering, brazing, riveting or in any other preferred manner to the arm 2 of the spring 1, said plate projecting throughout the greater portion of its length from said spring, in the direction in which the arm 2 projects, while one end of said plate indicated at 5, projects a slight distance in the opposite direction from the spring. Preferably, the

plate 4 is provided with a thin ornamental covering 6 of any desired material, such as celluloid.

Secured to the arm 3, I have shown two fingers 7 which may be formed of wire or any other desired material, said fin ers being integrally connected at one en as indicated at 8, while their opposite ends 9 are free of connection. These ends 9 project from the spring 1 in the same direction in which the arm 3 projects, while the fingerconneeting portion 8 projects a slight distance from said sprin in the opposite direction, forming a gar-piece which is adapted to be moved toward the rear end 5 of the plate 4 thus effecting separation of the fingers from the late and permitting the device to be readily applied to or removed from the hair.

Preferably, the fingers 7 are of serpentine formation to prevent easy withdrawal 'l'ronr the hair, and I also prefer to provide the greater portion of the plate 4 with a longitudinal rib 10 at its inner side, to force the hair between the fingers and co-operate with the latter in tenaciously holding the barrette in any position at which it may be applied. 'lhe'rib 10 may well be formed by stamping the plate 4, as will be clear from Fig.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the device is simple and inexpensive, et that it will be very desirable, may be quiclil y and easily'applie or removed, and will hold the hair in the desired orderly fashion at one or both sides of the head, as occasion may demand.

As excellent results are mbtainable from the details disclosed, they may well be followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may of course be made.

I claim:

A barrette comprising a U-shaped spring, an elongated plate secured to one arm of said spring and projectin throu hout the greater part ofits length from said spring 1n the direction in which said arm projects, said plate projecting slightly in the other direction from the spring, and a'pair of fingers secured to the other arm of said spring and projecting throughout the greater part of their lengths from the spring in the direc tion in which said other arm projects, the inner ends of said fingers projecting slightly from the spring in the opposite direction, the major portions of said fingers being of serpentine form, the major portion of said plate having a longitudinal rib on its inner side to force the 'users hair between said fingers.
