This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dispensing devices and is particularly adapted for use in connection with the dispensing of shaving cream, tooth paste or other similar preparations which are put up in collapsible tubes.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a means whereby a predetermined amount-of paste within the tube may be discharged therefrom without necessitating the handling of the collapsible tube, means being further provided for creating the vacuum whereby a predetermined quantity of the paste is delivered to the paste receiving chamber from which the same is discharged through a suitable discharge opening and onto the bristles of a brush placed in communication with the discharge opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means in connection with the dispensing device of the above mentioned character, which will cut off the supply of the paste within the tube to the charge receiving chamber when the paste within the latter is being discharged therefrom, thus preventing the loss of paste and further preventing the improper operation of the paste discharging means.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing device of the above mentioned character, which is of such a construction as to enable the parts to be readily disassembled for the purpose of replacing an empty collapsible paste tube with a full one.
A still further object is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my dispensing device showing a paste tube in position thereon and taken on line X-X of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is another vertical section thereof taken on line Y-Y of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the charge receiving chamber.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the base and the same may be constructed of any suitable material such as hard rubber or the like. The upper por tion of the base is provided with the threaded neck 2 for receiving and supporting thereon the cylindrical casing 3, the upper end of which is closed as is clearly illustrated in the drawing. The casing 3 is preferably formed of brass, although any other suitable metallic material may be sub stituted therefor. The casing is further provided adjacent the threaded lower end thereof with a vent 4 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 2. i
The supporting base 1 is further provided in its top with an enlarged annular recess 5 and the same provides a means for receiving therein the rubber washer 6. The washer has formed in the top thereof the substantially concaved portion 7, the purpose of which is to provideameans for conforming to the shape of the neck portion of the collapsible paste tube 8 and the washer is further provided with a threaded opening for receiving the threaded discharge end 9 of the paste tube 8 in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing. The collapsible paste tube 8 will thus be supported in an inverted position so that the discharge end thereof communicates with the inlet or feed opening 10 provided in the upper portion of the base 1. The casing 3 provides a means for enclosing the collapsible tube.
Formed in one side of the base 1 is the enlarged opening 11 and adapted to be supported therein is the charge receiving chamber designated generally byv the numeral 12 and the actuating means therefor designated generally by the numeral 13. The charge receiving chamber comprises a cylindrical shell one end of which is closed as illustrated at 14. Extending into the shell from the closed end thereof is the hub portion 15 and the latter is connected to the shell through the medium of the web 16. The shell is further provided with an opening 17 and the same is adapted for registry with the inlet opening 10 when in one position, and with the outlet opening 18 provided in the side of the base 1 when in another position in the manner hereinafter to be more fully described.
The charge receiving chamber actuating member which is designated generally by the numeral 13 comprises the cylindrical body 19 and the inner end thereof is reduced as illustrated at 20 to provide a means for enabling the same to fit in the open end of the shell 12 in the manner more clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. Extending outwardly from the reduced portion 20 of the cylindrical body 19 is the arcuate shaped plunger 21. The plunger 21 is adapted for operation within the open end 22 of the shell which forms the charge receiving chamber. Secured to the opposite end of the cylindrical body 19 and disposed on the outside of the base 1 is the knob 23, the same being fastened to the outer end of the cylindrical body 19 through the medium of the fastening screw 24. A bolt 25 extends centrally through the cylindrical body 19 and the knob 23 and through the hub portion 15 and the closed end portion 14 of the shell 12 and also through the base 1 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2. A nut 26 is threaded on the threaded end of the bolt for holding the same in proper position whereby the several parts within the opening 11 may be rotated therein when the knob 23 is operated because of the frictional engagement between the several parts.
The cylindrical body 19 frictionally engages the open end of the shell 12 and by turning the knob'23 the shell will be adapted to be rotated simultaneously with the rotation ofthe cylindrical body. For the purpose of limiting the rotary movement of the shell in the opening 11, a set screw such as is illustrated at 28 in the drawing extends upwardly from the base 1 into the opening 11 and has its upper free end operating in a slot or cut away portion 29 provided in the outer periphery of the shell adjacent the closed end 14 thereof.
Threaded in the outer end of the discharge or outlet opening 18 is the discharge spout 30 and the same is provided at its outer end with the hinged closure 31, a coil spring 32 being associated therewith for normally holding the closure in engagement with the outer end of the discharge spout 30.
The operation of my improved dispensing device may be briefly stated as follows With the parts arranged as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, the inlet opening 17 of the shell 12 is in registry with the inlet opening 10 in the base 1 and a supply of paste from the collapsible tube 8 is delivered into the charge receiving chamber 22. The plunger 21 on the inner end of the cylindrical body 1: is disposed in the charge receiving cham- 28 operating in the slot 29 will limit the r0" tary movement of the shell 12 so as to position the opening 17 in direct communication with the outlet openin 18.
When the opening 1 is in registry with the outlet opening 18, the member 13 is further rotated 'to cause the plunger 21 to force the paste within the chamber 22 out through the opening 17 and out through the outlet opening 18 and the discharge spout 30 onto the bristles of a brush which is placed over the outlet end of the discharge spout. It is of course to be understood that the closure 31 is disengaged from the discharge spout to permit the paste to be dispensed therefrom. In this manner a predetermined quantity of paste will be dispensed and a further supply of paste from the tube to the chamber will be prevented when the opening 17 is out of registry with the inlet opening 10. After all of the paste has been discharged from the chamber 22, the knob 23 is rotated in reverse direction causin the shell to return to its normal position w ereby the openings 17 in the shell will register with the inlet opening 10 and the continued rotation of the knob will move the plunger 21 so that a vacuum will be created within the chamber 22 whereby an additional supply of the paste from the tube 8 may be deivered through the inlet opening 10 and the opening 17 into the chamber 22. This operation thus refills the charge receiving ciamber and places the same in a position for the next operation whereby the contents thereof may be dispensed in the manner heretofore more fully described.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a dispensing device for use in connection with dispensing devices for use in connection with dispensin shaving cream, tooth paste or other suita le preparationswhich are put up in collapsible tubes has been provided, the same being of such a construction as to enable a person to readily and easily obtain a quantity of paste without necessarily handling the collapsible tube thus preventing any waste. Furthermore the construction of my dis ensing device enables the parts to be readi y disassembled whenever necessary and the casing may be removed for replacing the empty tube with a full one. By further providin a charge supplyin means which is control ed by the action 0 a vacuum, the necessity of employing squeezing rollers or other means for contracting the upper end of the collapsible tube is obviated, thus saving considerable expense as well as time and labor.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A dispensing device comprising a base provided with an inlet opening in the top thereof, with which is adapted to be communicated the opening of a paste tube said base provided with an outlet opening in the side thereof, a charge receiving chamber rotatably mounted in the base and being in the form of a shell, having one end open and the other end closed, a hub extending inwardly from the closed end of the shell, a partition disposed between the inner surface of the shell and the hub, said shell provided with an opening adjacent the partition adapted to be brought into registry with the openings of the base, an actuating member in said base frictionally engaged with the open end of the shell and provided with a lunger extending into the shell means for lmiting the movement of the shell so that at one limit the outlet opening registers and at the other limit the inlet opening registers with the opening in the shell, whereby when the actuating member is rotated in one direction, the opening of the shell is brought into registry with the inlet opening of the base and the shell is then stopped and the further rotation of the actuating member moves the plunger to create a vacuum in the shell for drawing paste from the tube, and
by then reversing the movement of the actuating member, the shell will be rotated to register its opening with the outlet opening of the base and the continued rotation of the actuating member will cause the lunger to expel the paste from the shell t rough the opening thereof and through the outlet opening of the base.
