IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-CLAMPS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 158,454, dated January 5, 1875 application led July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER P. BAJ3' COCK, of the city of' Adrian, State of Michigan, have invented a Saw-Clamp, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make a light, cheap, and effective saw-clamp by the combination of a wood back with the several metal parts, the jaws of which have projections placed in such a manner as to hold against both sides of the saw-blade simultaneously, yet not opposite to each other, thereby allowing the jaws to be made light, and to hold effectively either a thick or thin saw while tiling it.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view, showin g the clamp as holding a saw. Fig. 2 is a view of one jaw at tached to the Woodbaok. Fig. 3 shows the front jaw, with the projection and the two cups. Fig. 4 is a view of the straining-iron, with hooks on each end and a square hole, beveled, so as to admit and hold a squareheaded bolt. Fig. 5 is the eccentric lever 5 Iig. 6, the spring. j
The back jaw, A, is attached to one end of a board five or six inches wide, and about sixteen inches long, by means of two screws, as shown on the parts extended down in Fig. 2. The parts o o, Fig. 2, are extended down from the body of the jaw and rest on the tace of the board D. The jaw A abuts back, (about midway up,) so as to rest Afirmly on upper edge of the board. Just over the two screw-holes c e are projections t' z', cast out flush withthe face of the jaw, and reaching down about an inch below said face. These projections are about four inches apart. The front jaw, B, is fastened to the board D by means of two screws, as shown at ff. About three inches above the screw-holes ff are cups g g, cast in the inside of the jaw B, to admit rubber or spiral springs, said springs C G' resting between the jaw and the board D, and being held in place by the cups in the jaw B. The springs C C open the jaw B when the eccentric lever H is turned up. The lever H is placed under the hooked upper end of the straining-iron K, between it and the jaw B. At the cent-er, on the inside of thc jaw B, I make a projection, j, simi lar to t' on the jaw A, about the saine distance from the top, and out liush with the face ot' the jaw. One end of the straining-iron K is inserted underneath the lower end ot' the jaw B, and the other end rests over the outside of said jaw at the point where the lever H is applied, and it is strained to the board D by means of a bolt, S, passing through the straining-iron about three inches from its lo wer end, and also through the board D. The bolt S serves to tighten or loosen the jaw B, and adapts it to the various thicknesses ot' metal desired to be held, simply by turning the nut on the back side ot' the board one way or the other.
In using the clamp it is trst necessary to secure it in position, then turn the nut just sutciently to admit the saw between the jaws, and after the saw is inserted the eccentric lever H is pressed firmly down, which forces the jaw B toward the jaw A. Theproiections t i strike the saw on one side about four inches apart, while the projection j strikes it on the other side about midway between the two, so that their combined action does not force the jaws apart, yet et't'ectually keeps the saw-blade from vibrating, and enables the operator to tile faster and better than without such support.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination ofthe jaws A B, the former having the projections t' t', and the latter the projection j, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
