PROTECTING GLOVE FOR PLAYING HANDIBALL.
Application filed May 22, 1924. Serial No. 715,153.
- glove immediately adjacent to the inner ends of the fingers and thumb portions and around the crotches thereof. It is the object of my invention to provide a protect ng glove of this type including simple effective reinforcements for those portions just above mentioned upon which the greatest strain is thrown in use and in this way avoid premature breakage.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates by invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved protecting glove,
Figure 2 is a detail cross section through a portion thereof taken substantially on line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the reinforcing pieces removed.
Referring now to these figures my invention proposes a glove including a palm portion 10, continuations of which form the fronts of the thumb 11 and the fingers 12. The glove also includes a back, portions of which are seen at 13 in Figure 1, connected by a buckle and strap at 1st in order to hold the glove upon the hand, and portions of which form the pockets or backs 15 of the fingers and the thumb, secured by stitching around the edges to the front portions 11 and 12.
Gloves of this type, used for protection in the playing of handball, are provided with a thin uniform layer of padding secured along the palm portion 10 and the fronts 11 and 12 of the thumb and fingers, as by means of stitching indicated at 16, and its weakest points in use are at the inner ends or crotches of the thumb and fingers for which reason my invention proposes reinforcing pieces 17, one of which is shown in detail in Figure 3, and each of which is quite thick and approximately circular and provided with a radial slit 18 adapted to coincide with the crotch adjacent to which the reinforcing piece is utilized, so that the in nor portion of each reinforcing piece along its radial slit 18 is secured by the stitching 19 which also secures the finger pockets or backs along the inner portions of the thumb and finger side seams while each reinforcing piece is secured around its outer edge by additional stitches 20 along portions of the thumb and fingers and also portions of the palm 10 of the glove adjacent to the crotches of the fingers and thumb.
It is thus obvious that the reinforcing pieces are secured flatwise upon the palm portion of the glove immediately adjacent to and around the crotches of the fingers an thumb, the major portions of the reinforcing pieces being upon the palm portion of the glove so that but small sections of the reinforcing pieces extend along the fingers, but sutiicient to insure ample connection to the fingers and the thumb at and along the side seams thereof as well as adjacent thereto.
lVith the reinforcements constructed, placed and connected as described, a glove for handball purposes is constituted which will greatly outlast the ordinary unreinforced construction, without detracting in any manner from the ready comfortable use of the glove which is of course to be desired above all other considerations.
I claim:
1. A protecting glove for playing handball having palm, finger and thumb ortions, and approximately circular, radially slitted reinforcing pieces stitched flatwise to the outer face of the palm portion and the inner ends of the finger and thumb portions around the crotches between the inner ends of the finger and the thumb portions the slits registering with the crotches, the stitching being adjacent the periphery of the said reinforcing pieces.
2. A protecting glove for playing hand ball having palm, finger and thumb ortions, and approximately circular, radially slitted reinforcing pieces secured flatwise to the outer face of the palm portion and the inner ends of the finger and thumb portions and around the crotches formed be tween the finger portions, the slits registering with the said crotches.
