DRAIN FIXTURE.
Application filed June 8,1925. Serial No. 35,552.
My invention relates to. improvements for drain fixtures for shower baths and the like wherein the flanged edge of'an outlet of a floor lining is firmly clamped against the flange of a tray formed in connection with a drain pipe whereby leakage of water over the edge of the tray may be prevented.
In providing drains for shower bathsand the like wherein it is desired to drain Water downwardly through the floor it is difficult to obtain a water tight connection between the drain fixtures and the floor. This 'is particularly true and particularly objectionable in the case of shower baths such as installed in homes wherein any leakage around .the drain not only rots the floor and framework of the building-but often teg g s rious damage to the finish ofadjacent or underlying rooms and furniture contained therein. The primary object of my invention is therefore to provide a fixture which will effectually prevent leakage around the edge of the drain.
Another object is to provide an improved device of the character described which may be easily installed and which will facilitate the cleaning of the drain when necessary.
A further ob]ect -1s to provlde an 1mproved construction whiehcan be economically manufactured and which will form an eflieient and leak proof drain.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout said specification and drawings and in which,
Fig. 1 is a broken plan View of my improved drain fixture, and
Fig. 2 a vertical sectio n pf the drain as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate in general a drain pipe provided with a tray 2 formed adjacent the upper end thereof. The tray is arranged to be supported upon the floor supporting structure 3 with the upper edge of an ,annular flange 4- forried upon the edge of the tray arranged level with the upper surface of the floor boards 6 of a shower bath or the like from the floor of which it is desired to drain water.
'A lining 7 made of ductile metal or other suitable material is laid upon the floor of the shower bath in the well known manner said lining being provided with a downwardly disposed annular flange 8 formed' around the edge of an opening arranged to register with thedrain, said flange being adapted to fit against the inner surface of the tray flange The upper end of the drain pipe 1 extends Z slightly above the bottom of the tray 2 and has a plurality of openings 9 formed therein to permit water to drain from the tray intothe pipe. The upper end of the pipeis threaded, as at 10.
A cover 11 is mounted upon the threaded end of the drain pipe, said cover being adapted to fit the recess formed in the. floor by the tray 2 and the downwardly dispesed flanged edgei;8 of the"'1ini1ig. The edge of the cover 11" is shaped to form adownwardly disposed flange 12 adapted to engage the inner surface of the flange 8 and a plurality of apertures 14 are formed in the cover to permit the drainage of water into the tray.
The tray flange 4 is preferably shaped to diverge toward the upper edge thereof and the flanges 8 and 12 of the lining and the cover are shaped to conform to the inclination of the tray flange. The cover is preferably arched slightly toward the center and is made of material preferably having a spring resilience whereby the" cover may be pressed downwardly into the recess and. thereby firmlyclamp the lining flange 8 against the tray flange 4. This is accomplished by means of a nut 16 threaded onto the end ofthe pipe 1. As'the nut 16 is advanced against the cover the cover. is
' moved downwardly a nd' the flange 12 wedged against the flange 8 whereby said flange is pressed firmly against the trayso as to form a water tight connection therewith. The arched shape and the spring resilience of the coverpermit the cover to be pressed against the lining flange with suflicient pres sure to insure against any possible seepage of water between the flanges 8 and 4: and thence over the edge of the flange 4.
The upper end-of the drain pipe is closed by means of a plug 17 having apertures 18 formed therein, said plug being removable to permit cleaning of the pipe 1 when necess y.
p In operation, the water from the shower drains through the apertures 14 in the cover into the tray and thence into the drain pipe 1 through the apertures 9. Should the aper- 9 I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettures 9 become clogged by lint or other solid material washed through the taper-- until the wat'er has time to seep away. VVhen' the drain becomes clogged in any way the cover 11 may be readily removed by unscrewing the nut 16 from the end of the pipe 1, thereby permitting the cover to be removed and access had to the tray for cleaning. When the coverisreplaeed the flanges will be clamped again to iiorni a water tight cinnection, thereby maintaining the ethciency of the drain. i k
The specific form and construction of the several elements of my invention are of course subject to modification in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore tlo not widi to restrict myself to the specification details of construction which are herein disclosed, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within the scope of the appended claims Having thus described my invention what ters Patent is:
1. A drain for shower baths and the like comprising a floor lin ng having an opening and downward-l3 converging annular flange formed around the opening; a drain pipe; a tray formed adjacent the upper end of the pipe and'provided withan upwardly diverging annular flange adapted to engage the lining flange; an apertured cover mounted in connection with the upper end of the drain pipe and provided with a flange edge engaging the inner surface of the lining flange; and a nut threaded onto the upper end of the drain pipe to press the cover against the lining and thereby wedge the lining flange against the tray flange to prevent leakage of water thereover.
2. Admin for shower baths and the like comprising a floor lining having an opening and downwardly converging annular flange formed around the opening; a drain pipe; it
- tray formed adjacent the upper end of the pipeandprovided with an up wardly diverging annular flange adapted to engage the lining flange; an pertured cover mounted in connection witl he upper end of the drain pipe and 1)1'O"l(i with a flange edge engaginglthe inner surtace of the lining flange; and a nut threaded onto the upper end of the drain pipe to press the cover against the lining and thereby wedge the lining flange against the tray flange to prevent leakage of water thereover; and an apertured plug fitted into the upper end of the drain pipe. In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
