RING-BOLT FOR SHIPS AND BOATS TACKLE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,837, dated October 7, 1856.

To all whom t may concern: j Be it known that we, HUBBARD BIGELow and MORTIMER M. CAMP, both of New l Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new l and Improved Ring or Eye Bolt; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompaying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in 1 constructing and arranging the parts of a ring or eye-bolt, so that a line or other fastening may be released from it without the trouble and loss of time incident to those of the ordinary construction.

Figure l in the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of the bolt as it appears when its parts are closed up and Fig. 2 is a geometric elevation showing it opened.

A is the body of the bolt, constructed of such material as may be best suited to the size of the bolt, and the service that it is required to perform. The small sizes may be made of brass and the layer of cast or wrought iron; B the shank, with a screw thread cut upon its lower end by which it may be screwed into and secured to a dock timber or other similar position or be fastened to the deck or other part of a vessel by a nut being screwed upon it; C the tongue of the bolt, working at one end, bel tween the jaws at the top of one side of the j frame, upon a pin placed through it and. the jaws. The opposite end of it is formed into a tenon, rounded off at its upper eX- l tremity t0 allow a ready application of, or a speedy release to, the hold-fast D. The hold-fast D is forked at its lower end to work in a suitable recess in the body A upon a pin placed through the jaws of the fork and the body, and mortised at its upper end to t snugly upon the tenon end of the tongue C.

E, E are a pair of knuckle-jointed levers`the lower end of the former being jointed to the body A, and the upper end of the latter to the upper end of the hold-fast D`by the closing of which the hold-fast is moved over and upon the tenon end of the tongue to retain it firmly in place, and by their opening withdraws it and allows the tongue to be thrown up and the liney or other article secured by it to be released.

This improvement is particularly valuable for attachment to the boats of ships and other sea-going vessels which often times require to be lowered from the vessel to the water in a heavy sea that makes the disengagement of them from the fall-hooks with the eye-boltin ordinary use an operation of great peril and danger, while bv the use of this they can be disengaged. at the proper moment, instantaneously and with perfect safety. It is also valuable. for economy of time and labor, when placed upon docks or the decks of vessels to be used in the place of the ordinary eye-bolt.

We do not claim an eye or ringebolt made in parts that can be secured to or released from each other, but
