The nature of my said invention'consists in providing movable flukes, constructed in sucha manner that they canbe attached to the ordinaryanchor or to an anchor specially adapted to receive them, so. as to form a concave basin of large area suitable for a sandy or muddy bottom.

with an eye receiving a bolt 6, which bolt also passes through ears i, i, on the sides of the shank near the stock f, thereby connecting the sides of the movable flukes to near the top of the anchor and making said flukes capable of sustaining any strain to which they may be subjected. I also provide lugs 3, 3, on the straight edges of the fiukes where they come together (at right angles to the arms through holes in which lugs bolts 4;, a, are passed, and retained in place by means of split keys passing through a mortise in each bolt, 4, thereby holding said movable flukes permanently toeach other.

It will now be apparent that whenever the character of the bottom, or the force of a gale renders it probable that a vessel will drag the ordinary anchor that these movable flukes should be attached in their place and when in use will take hold of such a mass of-sand or mud as effectually to prevent the anchor being dragged; and it will also be apparentthat the additions made to the ordinary anchor to allow of these movable flukes being attached, do not interfere with the efficiency of the anchor when used without said movable flukes.

When the anchor is to be heaved, or hoisted in, a chain attached to the eye 8, should first be heaved on, which lifting the crown of the: anchor discharges all the sand or mud which would otherwise be lifted in the anchor flukes g, g. If found necessary projections may be formed on the convex sides of the movable flukes to set on each side of the arms 0, to guide and steady the fiukes when being lowered down into place.

I do not claim fitting an anchor so as to hold in mud or sand by providing either large fixed or movable flukes in themselves but VVhatI desire to secure by Letters Patent IS.' i i I claim the method herein described of fitting a pair of movable flukes (g) to a suitable anchor, so as to fit it to hold insoft or sandy soil, by means of the tie rods h, thimble 2, and collar 1, for thepurposes and as specified;
