Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEE ICE.
EDWARD R. O. MORGAN, OF MUMBLES, SOUTH WALES,ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO ABRAHAM MORREL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED ANCHOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,2? 3, dated June 21, 1864.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be `it known that I, EDWARD R. C. MOR. GAN, of the village of Mumbles, in the county ot' Glamorgan, South Wales, England, have invented a new and Improved Anchor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being h id to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked t-hereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the ai rangement of the two iukes hinged to the anchor shank by separate bolts, independent of each other and connecting the two lnkes together by means of a segment passing through a suitable hole or slot in the shank, whereby, while thelower fluke will, by its own weight, fall into the desired position, the upper fluke will be moved near to theshank to prevent any fouling of the cable, and at the same time prevent any strain on the upper fluke or shank.
By this improvement the cable is also prevented from fouling the anchor, and in case of one uke breaking the anchor will easily reverse and hold with the second uke.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a front view of myimproved anchor. Fig. Il shows a side view of the anchor-shank, and Fig. III a side view of the uke.
Y Similar letters represent similar parts.
A is the stock of the anchor; B, the shank. The lower end or crown of the shank,(), is furnished with two projections or catches,D D.
E E are the two dukes, fixed independent ot' each other to the crown C of the anchorshank by means of the two bolts n n. The nkes E E are connected together by a curved arm, G, passing through a hole or slot, It, in the throat of the anchor-shank. On each side of the throat projections mm are made, fitting partly around the hub of the tlukes.
When the lower iiuke lakes hold of the bottom, the curved arm G holds the upper fluke onto the sha-nk.I but at the same time the upper uke is brought onto the shank by the lower iiuke through the curved arm G no pressure or strain is brought on the same.
The great advantages of m y improved anchor consist in its increased efficiency with reduced weight, aftordin g material relief to ships bows in a head sea, facility of transportation to and from ships, and convenience of stowage, as thc same is composed of several parts which can be readily taken to pieces, and with facility put together again. Besides, the tlukes being separate and independent, the same can be more easily forged and give the opportunity of having one spare fluke in case of accident,
or if one fluke should break away on weighing the anchor.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Connecting the two tlukes of an anchor, hinged to the shank by separate bolts, by a curved bar, G, passingthrough a suitable hole, h, in the shank, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described and set forth.
