To all whom itmwy concern:
Be it known that I, LEO J. WAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling,
in the-county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clippers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- 1 tion, reference vbeing had to the accompanyintended for usein barber shops, though it is capable of advantageous use in other places, and for purposes other than cutting air.
One object of my invention is the provision of a structure to be operated by an alternating electric current Another object of my invention is to arrange the parts so that the member which usually serves as a pole piece, is mounted so that it moves, and by its movement, and through suitable connections moves the movable clipper blade, or the mechanism of the device.
Another object of my invention is to reduce the air gap between thestationary and movable pole pieces by locating all of the air gap at one point, thereby increasing the magnetic field and the available power.
Other objects of. my invention will be described in the specification.
The novelty of my invention will be here-v inafter more fully set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claims.

In constructing a clipper in accordance with my present invention, I provide a .handle portion 1, to one end of which I atalong the wires 6. One of the coils is provided with a stationary pole piece 7' which may be held in place by screws 8, that por-. tion of the pole piece 7 which is farthest from the clipper bladesbeing provided with a pivotal mounting 9 bym'eans of which the movable pole piece 10 is mounted. The pole piece 10 as is clearly shown passes through the other coil 4 and this coil is provided with a sufiiciently large opening to permit the movable pole piece through its range of travel.
The free end of the polepiece 10 carries a bracket 11 which serves as a mounting for a driving and tension screw 12, the latter being provided with a spring 13 which serves to hold it in any adjusting position, the lower end of the screw 12 entering a suitable opening in the movable blade 3 to not only drive this blade, but press it downwardly against the stationary blade 2.
To maintain. the blade 3 in proper position, a guard 14, shown in Fig. 2 but removed from Fig. 1, is carried by the movable pole piece and its lower edge cooperates with a rib 15 formed on the upper face of the blade 3, the guard 14 serving as a closure for the front end of the handle portion so that the hair or material being cut does not enter the interior of the handle portion.
A cover 16 is provided for the handle portion to make the closure complete.
A spring 17 is mounted on the movable pole piece 10 adjacent its pivotal point 9, and an adjusting screw 18 passes through the handle portion and cooperates with the spring 17 to move the movable pole piece away from the stationary pole piece during the intervals between the periods of attraction between the stationary and movable pole pieces.
It is to be noted that the pivotal connection between the pole pieces 7 and 10 may be made of anylength desired by increasing the vertical thickness of the ends of the pole pieces s0 that the upward thrust produced by the screw 12 may be properly resisted. It is also to be noted that by properly shaping the adjacent parts, the air gap at the pivotal'endof the movable pole piece, and between it and thestationary pole piece may be reduced to practically nothing, with out unduly increasing the friction of the moving parts which would be set up by actual contact between the rounded portions of the stationary and movable pole pieces at the pivotal. point,- f-rom which it willbe seen would that the magneticfield is complete with the exception of the one air gap near the chpper blades.
It is to be noted that by providing'the movable pole piece, and mounting it through one of the coils, this pole piece becomes magnetized simultaneously with the other pole piece but opposite and the movement coils, and a moving element connected to.
