Description

c. .F. MAYER.
- Joints for Lead-Pipes. 158297. Patented Dec.29,1 8741" I i gzi.
\wiinesse z Inventor: 1 1m WM, 4 4,
THE GRAPHIC CO,FKJ'TOLITH.39& 4| PARK PLACE, NJ. 7 I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. MAYER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOINTS FOR LEAD PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,297, dated December 29, 1874; application filed July 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OHAELEs F. MAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Joint for Lead Pipe, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional side view. Fig. 2 is a similar section of a modification thereof. Fig. 3 is an end-view of the nipple which forms part of this joint.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a square, polygonal, oval, or feathered projection or socket on the nipple, which is secured on the end of a lead pipe, with a socket or a projection of corresponding shape in the casting to which said lead pipe is to be connected, and with a nut which overlaps a flange on the nipple, and screws on the end of the casting in such a manner that, in screwing up said nut, the nipple is prevented from turning, and consequently the lead pipe is saved from being twisted.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a casting-such, for instance, as a faucet-to which a lead pipe is to be connected. The joint between said casting and the lead pipe is produced by anipple, B, and a nut, O, which screws on a screw-thread, a, on an extension, 0, of the casting A, and which overlaps a flange, b, which projects from the nipple, so that by screwing up said nut the face of the flange b is drawn up tight against the face of the extension 0, or against a shoulder formed on said extension. In the inner end of the nipple B is a square, polygonal, oval, or feathered socket, d, which fits a corresponding projection, e, on the end of the extension 0, so that when the nipple is applied to said extension, and the nut is screwed up, the nipple is prevented from turning round, and the lead pipe is saved from being twisted.
It is obvious that the extension 0 can be pro vided with a socket, 6*, and the nipple with a corresponding projection, 01*, as shown in Fig. 2, without altering the result.
The nut O I have provided with radiating arlnsf, so that it can be conveniently turned on or ofi' by hand without the aid of a wrench.
The lead pipe is soldered to the nipple B in the ordinary manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a square, polygonal, oval, or feathered projection or socket on the nipple B, which is secured in the end of a lead pipe, with a socket or projection of correspondin g shape in the casting A, to which said lead pipe is to be connected, and with a nut which overlaps a flange on the nipple, and screws on the casting A, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereuntoset my hand.
CHAS. F. MAYER.
