Description
NrrED STATES HENRY FRASER, or Pioro'U, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SODA WATER COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 158,267, dated December 29, 1874; application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY FRASER, of Pictou, in the county of Pictou, Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soda-Fountain Cook, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved cock taken through the line or m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the lower part of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved soda-fountain cock, which shall be so constructed that there will be no danger in using it, from the breaking of the small screws by which the two parts are held together, in the cock usually used, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction, convenient in use, and durable.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the lower part of the cock, which is screwed into the fountain in the ordinary way, and upon the top of which is formed a deep ring-flange, B, having a screwthread cut in its inner surface to receive the screw (J formed upon the upper part D of the cock. In the center of the top of the part A, and in the center of the lower end of the screw 0, are formed circular recesses to receive the ends of the plug E, the handle F of which passes out through a transverse slot in the flange B.
The vent through the part A passes up in an inclined direction, so that its upper orifice may be at one side of the center of the recess.
The vent through the upper part D, and through the screw 0, is vertical, so that its lower orifice may be in the center of the plug recess.
The vent through the plug E is inclined, its
upper orifice being in the center of the upper end of the plug E, and its lower orifice being at one side of the center, so that when the plug E is turned into one position the orifices may all correspond, and the vents may be continuous, and when the plug is turned upon its axis the vents may be disconnected or interrupted.
The plug-recesses may have packing placed in them to make the joints tight. The upper part D projects over the upper edge of the flange B, and is provided with a set-screw, G, which, when the upper part has been screwed down upon the plug E with the proper force, may be turned down upon the edge of the flange B, and thus prevent the upper part from working off or moving. B this construc tion the part D will always be held squarely in place, and thus will not be exposed. to any unequal pressure. This result cannot be attained when the two parts of the cock are connected by three or more screws, as it is utterly impossible to adjust said screws so accurately that the pressure will be equally distributed among them, and which unequal pressure is the cause of the breaking of said screws, and
the consequent danger from their use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The soda-water cock herein described, consisting of the base portion A, flange or shell B, having an internal screw-threiul, and an aperture in its side, the top section 0 D, provided with an external screw-thread, the plugvalve E, and handle F, all constructed and combined as herein shown and described.
HENRY FRASER. Witnesses:
MONT HARPER, 1. H. MOFFAT.
