April 27 1926B 0. w. Jdflflfs fli CARD 0R PAHPHLET HOLDING AND FEEDING DEVICE Filed Feb. 28, 1924 I INVENTOR OIJIF 14 J'oHlvso/v n QTTORNEY Patented Apr. 27, 1923.
: UNITED stares PATENT OFFICE.
, OLAF W. JOHNSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND ASSIGNMENTS, TO BAKERIES SERVICE CORIEORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
CORPORATION.
QABID R PAMPHLET HOLDING AND FEEDING DEVICE.
. Application filed February 28, 1924; Serial No. 695,751.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF WV. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, King County, Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'ments in' Card or Pamphlet Holding and Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to card or pamphlet holding andfeeding mechanism; more particularly it relates to a device of that character designed for use in connection with machines whereby loaves of bread are wrapped; it being the object of the invention to provide means operable by and in conjunction with the bread wrapping mechanism whereby novelties and printed matter "such as cards and .pamphlets, may be de livered singly onto each loaf of bread-just before the wrappers are applied.
' Another object of the invention resides 1 in theprovision of a card or pamphlet container' of novel construction wherein the cards or pamphlet-s maybe stacked upon a spring pressed feed member and from which they are delivered, one at a time, by
Y contact with the top card or pamphlet of friction feed rollers operated by a driving connection with the bread wrapping machine. v
Other objects of the invention reside in thevarious details of construction and comf'binatio-n of parts embodied in the invention,
and in their mode of operation. f In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided the im- 1 proved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a card or pamphlet holding device and feed mechanism embodied by the present invention. 7 Figure 2 is a perspective view, showing the oppositeside of thecard or pamphlet holder from that shown in Figure 1; the door of the housing being open.
Figure 3is a central vertical section of the device.
Figure 4 is a ible retainer.
Figure 5 is a top view of the device. Referring more in detail to the several perspective view of the flexviews of the drawings on the upper endsof rods 6 which extend" through openings 7 in the. bottom wall 8 of the housing, and, at their lower ends, are attached to a. plate 9., To the plate 9 are attached the lower ends of a plurality of tensioned springslO which act to lift the rods and plate to maintain the top of the pack 4, adjacent the top of the housing, in proper relation tothe feed mechanism. These springs are attached, at their upper ends, to a pair of horizontal, parallel bars 11 and 12 upon which the housing 1 is mounted for slight vertical movement.
The present device, when used with a.
bread wrapping machine, is disposed adjacent the upward line of travel of the loaves.
As is shown in Figure 3,each loaf of bread 13 passes upwardly along the housing 1 and strips of wrapping paper, one of which is shown at 14, are delivered into the path of the .loaf as it passes above the housing. Mechanism, not shown, then causes the paper to be wrapped about the loaf. The present device delivers cards or pamphlets,
one at a time, onto the loaves ust before they come in; contact with their wrapper, and the latter then serves to hold thecards or pamphlets and to draw them from the delivery opening of housing.
The means provided for feeding the cards as shown in dotted lines at 2-0 in' Figure 0 where it-will becaught-up between the ador pamphlets to the loaves comprises a pair of corrugated, rubber feed rollers 16 on a rotatably fixed shaft 17 that extends horizontally across the top opening of the container and which is supported independent of the housing 1. These rollers are adapted to come into rubbing contact with the top card or pamphlet of the pack and to thereby cause it to be advanced to the position 0 vancing loaf and its wrapper. As the top card or pamphlet is withdrawn from the pack, the next lower'one of the pack'is held temporarily by a rubberpad 21 at the end of a spring plate 22that is supported from the top'wall 2301f the-housing. This pad yieldingly resists the withdrawal of the card or pamphletbut is not suflicient to overcome the pull 'ofthe feed rollers 16.
In order that the feeding of cards or pamphlets will not be overlappingor continuous, I have cut out segments of the feed rollers, as shown at 25. This provides for proper synchronized delivery of the aids or pamphlets in accordance with movement of the loaves of bread.
To more'ac-curately guide the cards or pamphlet-s into position to be received by the bread, I provide the housing, at the edge of the delivery openingB, with an inclined lip 26. across which, inspaced relation, is a wire 27 which will prevent the cards or pamphlets, after being-released by the feed rollers 16, from falling from position.
To prevent the feeding of more than one card or pamphlet at a time, I have attached a plate 30 to the innerwall of the housing,
andthis has its upper edge at such level thatiit will retain the second card or pamphlet from the top of the pack, but will per mitthe top one to-be advanced. Ordinarily, such a plate isnot necessary, but sometimes becomes so if the cards or pamphlets are of such a nature that they tend to stick together.
Should itbe:desired to-discontinue feeding of the cards or. pamphlets at any time, the housing 1.may be lowered so as to cause the feed rollers 16 to be disengaged from the pack. This lowering is effected by means of a lever 35 that is pivotally fixed, as at 36, to
.a cross bar. 37 extended between and fixed to the bars 11 and 12. At its inner end this lever is connected with a looped strap 38 attachedcentrally to the bottom wall of the housing and at its outer end has a handle 39 whereby it may be'raised or lowered and seated withinnotches 40 of a plate 41 that ing position where it is yieldingly retained by means of a spring 12 that is coiled about a pin extended through the looped strap 38 with its ends bearing downwardly against the supporting bars 11 and 12. The housing is retained functionally in position and its upward movement limited by means of straps 15 looped about the bars 11 and 12 and secured to the housing in such manner as to permit only vertical movement thereof.
IVhile this construction is designed for a certain type of machine, it -is'readily apparent that by slight variations in details of construction", it could-be adapted to other types ofmachines without departing from the spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not wish to be confined only to details herein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent 'ofthe United States, is:
1. The combination with a wrapping machine of a card or pamphlet holding and feeding device comprising a housing having a delivery opening. at the top, supporting means for the housing whereby it 1s permitted a slight vertical travel, yieldahle means within the housing whereon a card or pamphlet pack may be supported and maintained adjacent the delivery opening of the housing, rotatably driven feed rollers operable through the opening for engaging the cards or pamphlets'to feed them, one at a time, from the housing, yieldable means nor mally retaining thehousing at its upper limit of travel and means for moving it downwardly to disengage the card or painohlet pack fromthe feed rollers.
2. In adevice offthe class described, a housing for containing a car or pamphlet pack having a .top delivery opening through which cards or pamphlets may be discharged from the housing, friction feed rollers disposed toengage the top of the pack to feed the cards or pamphlets singly fromthe pack; said housing having av laterally turned lip at the edge of said opening over which the cards or pamphlets are'discharged, and a cross member in spaced relation above'the lip which co-operates with the lip to support the cards or pamphlets after being released by the feed rollers.
3. A card or pamphlet holding and feeding mechanism, comprising a housing for containing acard or pamphlet pack, and having a top opening through which-said "cards or pamphlets may be discharged, supporting bars for the housing, a horizontal plate within thehousing on which the card or pamphlet pack may 'be mounted, rods fixed to the said plate and extended downwardly from the housing, a plate fixed to the lower ends of said rods, springs attached to the latter plate and to the housing supports whereby the pack is yieldingly retained adj ace'nt the top opening, a feed shaft ers, and means for depressing the spring and extended across the said opening, friction for adjusting the housing downwardly from feed rollers on said shaft for delivering the the feed rollers to discontinue thedischarge 10 e cards or pamphlets singly from the housing, of cards or pamphlets. 5 a spring interposed between the base of the Signed at Seattle, King County, Washinghousing and said supporting bars for retainton, this 19th day of January, 1924.
