KNOB.
Application filed January 5, 1925. Serial No. 546.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be itvknown that I, Dr v11) S. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knobs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knobs and the method of manufacturing the same, and is directed particularly to the art of manufacturing ornamental knobs of laminated pyroxylin sheet material.
Prior to my invention, knobs have been either manufactured by a molding process or by forming from a solid block of material and in either of such cases it has been impossible to produce a finished knob that has the desired ornamentation since its color throughout will correspond to that of the material from which the knob is made.
According to the principal features of my invention, 1 provide knob that is made of a plurality of sheets of material that may be of. various colors, to thereby produce a knob comprising a combination of colors to create an ornamental effect and is accomplished by laminating a plurality of sheets of material of different colors to form a block having a predetermined arrangement of colors, as distinguished from a knob made from an unlaminated or solid block of material, the color of which is uniform throughout.
The principal features of my invention are are capable of broad application, but will be described in connection with a knob that is particularly adapted for use with the gear shifting lever of an automobile.
The embodiment of the invention at pres ent preferred will be described in connection with the illustrative embodiment thereof shown by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a plurality of sheets of material secured together in a superposed relation, to form a block;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the block of Fig. 1 after it has been formed into the shape of a knob, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a plurality of sheets, 1 to 6 inclusive, of material are secured together in a superposed relation by cementing or the like to form a laminated block. The said sheets may be of any material that will lend itself to a machining operation, but I have found that sheets of pyroxylin are particularly adapted for the practice of my invention since this material is easily workable when cemented together, and is of such a character that each sheet may be colored as may be desired. 1 have: shown the various sheets as being of different colors in order to illustrate that it is possible to produce any color effect desired.
The block may be turned on a lathe or otherwise shaped into the form desired as for instance in'the form of a sphere in Fig. 2, and an aperture 7 is preferably provided therein for securing the knob to a lever or the like.
As the block is turned into a. spherical shape, the different colored sheets of pyroxylin present plurality of rings of different colors as will be seen by reference to Fig. 3, whereby a knob is produced that is ornamented by a plurality of rings of difierent color.
Any number of sheets may be employed and the color of the sheets may be selected to produce any color effect or arrangement of colors desired. Thus it will be apparent that by the selection and arrangement of colored sheets, that it is possible to produce a predetermined ornamentation that is vari able within wide limits.
I am aware that many changes may be made in the practice of the invention without departing from the scope of the invention, and I prefer, therefore, to be limited by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description.
What I claim is:
In an article of manufacture, in combination, a knob comprising a plurality of sheets of pyroxylin of different color secured together in a superposed relation, the knob being formed so that the outer sheets are circumscribed by the marginal edges of the inner sheets.
. in testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
DAVID s. BARTLETT.
