Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WASHINGTON Gr. GAIN, OF TYLER, TEXAS.v
IMPROVEMENT IN BME-TIES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,24 3, dated December 29, 1874; application tiled September 3, 1S74.`
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WASHINGTON G. GAIN, Of Tyler, in the county of Smith and State Ot' Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, and to be applied to other things, such as barrels, tubs, bracelets, and ladies garters; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description there Ot', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of the ends of the blanks for the tie. Fig. 2 shows the tie interlocked. Fig. 3 shows the tie in act of locking.
The Object of my invention is to avoid the use, in a bale tie, of any buckle Or intermediate piece whatever tO fasten together the ends Of the hoop, and leave the entire tie in One piece.
, My invention consists in providing the flaring end of a cotton-bale band with shoulders, sO that when the clasping-ears on the other end are engaged On the daring end the edges of the ears will rest against said shoulders, as hereinafter' set forth.
In Order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the hoop, having its ends stamped out in about the shape shown in the blank, Fig. 1. Ears a a are left at the sides ot the hoop at One end, B, and flaring corners a c at the other end.
Shoulders a a" lare made on this ilaring end-G, so that the strain On the tie will be directly lateral and against the edges b b Of the grooved catches c o. The ears a a are then brought over, so as tO form grooved catches c c, Fig. 2, the Open in g between the catches tlarin g from :v to m. The end C has its Wedge shape to correspond to the lines of the inside of the grooved catches co, and the distance between the inside edges of the` catches is sufficient tO allow the main width of the hoop y y tO pass between them.
When the bale is in the press the hoop is passed around it, and the ends brought together with the grOOved catches c c underneath, and the main width of the hoop passed between the grooves. The expansion Of the bale then draws the lared end intO the catch es, and it is wedged there, and the edges b b held firmly against the shoulders a a, being unable to pass through. This secures the bale.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
. In a bale-tie the Haring end C, provided with shoulders a a, in combination with the end B, provided with turned -down grooved ears c c, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WASHINGTON e. OAIN.
