Description

P.' BURNS.
Buckles for Harness. N0.l58,198. Patented Dec. 29,1874L.
[11min]? GRfiPrEICCO. FFOTD'LITHVSS S. PAF'K PLACE N Y UNITED, STATES- PETER BURNS OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,198 dated December 29, 1874; application filed March 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER BURNs, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Buckles for Harness, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to adapt the trace-buckle covered by the patent, No. 142,907, granted to Kasson Frazer on the 16th of September, 1873, for use on single harness. In the practical application of said buckle to single harness it was found that the thills were liable to strike against and break off the projectin g lever-arms by which the tongue is operated in withdrawing it from the strap.
My improvement is intended to obviate this difiiculty, and to this end it consists in substitutin g for such lever-arms, which are omitted, a projecting loop, which is located within the compass of the frame of the buckle, the arms of which are so bentas to protect the loop against the blows of the thills.
The annexed drawing is a perspective view of my improved buckle.
The general construction of the buckle and its principle of operation are identical with those shown and fully described in the abovementioned patent of K. Frazer, to which reference may be had for a detailed explanation. The only departure consists in the omission of the leverarms, projecting laterally from the tongue-plate, as there exhibited, and substituting in lieu thereof a loop, A, which projects obliquely from the ton gue-plate B, and in such a manner that it will be under the strap through which the tongue 0 is to pass. This loop, be-
ing no wider than the tongue-plate, of which it forms a part, is wholly within the frame of the buckle, which has its arms suitably bent to shield it, all as clearly illustrated. The aperture formed by it is of sufficient size to admit of the insertion of the tip of the thumb or finger for the purpose of obtaining a ready hold on the tongue-plate when it becomes desirable or necessary to withdraw the tongue from the strap.
I prefer the loop described, although a solid handle, in contour something like the loop, might be substituted for it.
I do not, however, propose to claim, broadly, the application of a thumb-piece or handle for affording a convenient means for withdrawing the tongue, but limit myself to its adaptation to the particular style of buckle described and to its location, in consequence of which it is not liable to damage from the blows of the thills, as already stated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The herein-described harnessbuckle, having the pivoted lever tongue-plate, provided with a loop, A, directly under the tongue 0, and within the compass of the frame, the arms .of which are so bent as to shield it, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to the foregoing specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER BURNS. Witnesses: W. B. BURNS, W. S. HUNTINGTON.
