ADJUSTKBIIE BOX. FORM FOR WRAPPING MACHINES.
Application f11ed"May 2, 1925, Serial "No. 22478. Renewed Februarya5, 1926.
To'aZl zlohomitmay concern:
Be it known that '1, JOHN \V. LANDRUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Adjustable Box Forms for rapping Machines; and I do hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in tl'ieai't to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relatesto abox for use on wrapping machines, and it generally aims to provide a novel construction which is adjustable, so that the machinefiwill be adapted for work in connection with boxes, tops orthe like,'dilfering in'size, to thereby increase the range of usefulness of the machine. k r
Another object is 'to provide a'novel construction wherein various parts are supplied in different sizes anc are arranged interchangeably to accomplish the endstated.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connec-. tion with accompanying drawings illustrating an operativeembodiment.
"In said drawings V Figure lfis a'view in side elevation illustra ing the invention in connection with associated parts of the box wrapping machine;
Figure 2 Figure 3 is a plan viewof the form;
is ahorizontal sectional view taken through the parts of the form and on aline with one row of the dowel rods;
Figure l IS a side elevation of the holder;
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the holder;
Figure 6 is a longitudinal central sectional view;
Figure 7 is an inverted plan view;
Figure 8 is a perspective view from above of the center panel;
Figure 9 is, a perspective view of one of the corner blocks, and I Figure 10 is a perspective view of one of the intermediate blocks.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the form is shown generally at 10 and is used for instance in a box wrapping machine such as that of the Stokes and Smith" type, the
form being adapted to fit the box for (mac,
tion during the gluing or pasting of an ornamental wrapper thereon. Th'e'holder is removably carried by a plunger rod '11 adapted for depression or vertical movement in'any suitable manner.
Carrying out the invention, lower corner blocks areprovided as at 12 each havinga round vertical opening 13 therethrough whereby thedevice is slidably mounted on guiding'elements 14 of the ma-chine, which are adjustable to vary the distance between them lengthwise and tr'ansversely ofthe machine so as to accommodate different adj ustments'of'the form. At the sides and ends, intermediateblocks 15 are provided between the corner blocks. The intermediate blocks 15 at their sides and bottoms are intact through "the provision of walls 16 and 17, respectively, and at'their ends have bearings 18 in which dowel rods 19 arerigidly secured, and which-project beyond'the outer ends of said bearings 18. The projecting ends of said rods 19 or pins,:eXtend removably into openings 20 provided in two ends of the corner blocks 12. The rods 19 are preferably arranged in a vertical row of two, that is one over the other'as shown. Threaded in each block '12, is a screw 21 adapted for binding'against the uppermost of the dowel pins or rods .19'to thereby secure the end bl'ock'sfand intermediate block together against relative movement. These screws are of any suitable type but preferably have square or other sockets 22 therein adapted to' befitted by a wrench in order to elfectthe turning thereof.
The under surfaces-0f the blocks 12ndjacent the inner corners are recessed as at 23 and entering saidrecesses and filling the entire space at the lower surface of the block is a supporting panel 24. The under surface of this panel is flush with the under surfaces of the blocks'12 and 15. Detachably connected to the panel 24 as by screws 25, is an attaching post 26, adapted for detachable connection to the plunger 11, as by means of a set screw or the like 27.
The block is braced and rigiditied bybars 30, one at each end thereof, slotted at their ends as at 31, to accommodate fastening screws 32 which enter suitable threaded openings in the corner blocks 12. In saddied relation to the bars is a bar 33 having a central depressed portion 3e pro the post 28 snugly extends.
vided with an opening 83 through which The ends of bar 33 are slotted as at 35 and screws 36 pass therethrough and enter screw threaded openings 37 in the bars 80. The structure is braced and l'ig'idified by the bars 30 and 33 and the post 26 is particularly steadied by the bar 38. I
In a complete outlit, all of the parts except the set screws and the corner blocks, are made in pluralities and each one in different sizes, so that they may be matched and connected together to form forms of diiierent sizes, to the end that thesame may be used in connection with different sized boxes or tops and at the same time, will have their sides and ends and under surface ClOSP. It will be understood of course that in all sizes, the dowel pins or rods 19 will be of the same size so that they may enter the openings of the corner blocks. Also, the shank or post 26 need not be made in a )luralitv since with it bein detachable, it
may he applied to various sized panels 24.
In using the device, it Wlll be understood that the appropriate parts are selected and connected together as'shown in the drawingsand that when a ditterent sized box is to be operated upon, different sized lntermediate blocks 15, panel 2st and bars and 83 may be used to provide such size.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
XV hat is claimed is V 1. A device of the class described comprising a panel, corner blocks disposed thereon. intermediate blocks between the corner blocks, bars connecting the corner blocks, a bar in saddled relation to the first mentioned bars, and a fastening element for the ianel extending throu 'h the last mentioned bar.
2. A device of the class described comprising corner blocks, intermediate blocks, said intermediate blocks having bearings at their ends, dowel pins mounted by the bearings and extending beyond the same, said corner blocks having openings removably receiving the dowel pins, and means supporting said blocks and closing the space between them at the bottom.
3. A device 01" the class described comprising corner blocks, intermediate blocks, said intermediate blocks having bearingsat their ends, dowel pins mounted by the bearings and extending beyond the same, said corner blocks having openings removably receiving the dowel pins, means supporting said blocks and closing; the space between them at the bottom, and securing elements carried by the corner blocks engageable with the dowel members.
4. A device of the class described comprising corner blocks, intern'iediate blocks, said intermediate blocks having bearings at their ends, dowel pins mounted by the bearings and extending eyond the same, said corner blocks having openings removably receiving the dowel pins, means supporting; said blocks and closing the space between them at the bottom, said corner blocks being; recessed at their under surfaces to accommodate said means, a fastening element extending from said means, and means bracingsaid fastening element and secured to the blocks.
5. A device of the class described comprising corner blocks having openings therethrough adapted for coaction with guiding elements, intermediate blocks having bottom and side walls and bearings at th Ir ends, dowel members mounted in said bearings and extending removably into the cor ner blocks, fastening elements for said dowel members carried by the corner blocks, the inner corner portions at the lower surface of the corner blocks being cut away, a panel extending into said cutaway portions, an attaching post detachably connected to said panel, bars fastened to the cor er blocks, and a bar through which said attaching member passes straddling the first mentioned bars and being secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN XV. LANDRUM,
