NAILING FRAIVIE.
Application filed March 11, 1924. Serial No. 898,483.
To all whom it may concern: made, within the scope of the invention, as
Be it known that I, ERNEST M. ROSE, a des-ribed and claimed. citizen of the United States residing at In the drawing, forming a part of the ap- Dulce, in the county of Rio Arriba and State plication: of New Mexico, have invented certain Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention, 60 new and useful Improvements in Nailing showing the corner posts in position in the Frames, f which th f ll i g is a specifianchor members, and the end pieces nailed cation. thereto.
This invention relates to improvements Figure 2 is a sectional view, taken on the in nailing frames, and particularly to a line 2--2 of Figure 1. 05
frame for holding angular corner pieces of Figure 3 is a detail perspective view, of boxes, wiile the end pieces are nailed one of the positioning plates adjustably thereto. mounted on the angle member.
An object of the invention is to provide Figure 4 is a plan view of the invention, a pair of angle bars of suitable form for rewith the corner post and end pieces re- 70 ceiving the angular corner pieces adapted moved. to secure the side and end pieces in crate Fig. 5 is a sectional view, taken on the line forming relation, and for strengthening the 55 of Figure 1-. Corners of the Crate The angle members, which are of dupli- This invention is used in connection with cate form, are indicated at 1, and are of a 7 crates which are formed of a plurality of crOSS section as indicated at Figure 2, havspaced side and end members to provide a 111g a vertical wall 2, and an angular wall crate suitable for shipping fruit, such as formed lntegra-l with the vertical wall 2, pineapples and the like, the end pieces used and extending at an angle of substantially 25 b i f tri n lar cross section, which 00- T5 in relation to said vertical wall as indiso casions diificulty in the assemblage of the called at 3, sa d angular wall being formed corner pieces and the nailing of the end With a plurality of aligned openings 4, for and side pieces thereto, as it is difficult to a purpose to be presently described. The hold these triangular corner pieces in poends of the angularwall of the members 1, sition, while the side and end pieces are are formed .Wlllll laterally extending flanges H5 nailed thereto. This invention, therefore, 5, arranged in a substantially vertical plane, provides a frame which is adapted to hold and the vertical walls 2 are formed with these corner pieces while the end pieces are fl g 6 beyond the flanges 5, and in spaced nailed thereto, in order to prevent the same relation therewith, as clearly shown in Fig- 5 from becomingtwisted and out of alignure i, for receiving between the flanges ment, which will make it difficult to assemble and 6, the side bars 7, which are formed the crate, this invention holding correspondwith an arcuate recess 8, in the central poring sides of the triangular corner post in tion, and are adapted to be secured to the proper relation, until the end pieces are flanges 5 and 6, by suitable rivets 9 or the nailed thereto. like, for holding the angle members 1 in A further object of the invention is to rigid spaced relation. The angle members provide a plurality of spacing members adare Joined, in the central portion, by a cenjustably mounted on the angular end bar, tral bar member 10, having the end portions which receives the corner post, and are held thereof inclined relative to the body of the in spaced relation by suitable side members bar, and secured to the angular walls 3 of connected thereto for accurately positioning each member, for preventing flexing of the the end pieces or boards in proper spaced central portion of the m mb r, relation. Spacing members are indicated at 11 and The invention includes other objects and 12 respectively, each being formed of plates 50 improvements in the details of construction, 13, having a longitudinally extending slot and arrangement of parts, which are more 14, and a lateral flange 15, on the upper particularly pointed out in the following edge thereof, adapted to engage the upper description and claims, directed to a pre edge of the angular Wall 3, the spacing ferred form of the invention, it being unmembers 11 being formed at one end with 5 derstood, however, that variations may be upwardly extending fingers 16, adapted to project above the upper end of the angular wall 3, while the spacing members 12 are formed at the opposite end of the plates 13, with corresponding fingers 17, also extending above the upper free edge of the angular wall 3, the purpose of these spacing members being to position the end pieces, which form the end of the crate, in proper relation on the corner posts. This functioning of the spacing members is indicated clearly in Figure 1, where the corner posts are shown, at 18, seated in the angle members 1, and on the upper faces of which are nailed the end pieces 19, the spacing mem' bers in this case, being used, to properly position the central end piece, in the central portion of the corner post 18, in order to provide equal faces at each side of the central piece and the upper and lower end pieces, the edges of which terminate at the ends of the corner posts. Suitable bolts, having wing nuts, extend through the openings 4, in the angular walls 3 of the members 1, and the slots 14, of the spacing members, as clearly indicated at 20, for securing the members to the angle members, and permitting the adjusting thereof, for spac ing the end pieces in proper relaton, on the corner post.
Vith the use of this nailing frame, it will be clear from the above description, that the corner posts, of triangular sect on, used in the formation of fruit crates, and the like, when positioned in the angle members 1, will be retained therein, in such a position that the end pieces of the crate may be conveniently nailed thereto, without the danger of having the pieces becoming twisted during the nailing operation, so that a true and uniform box structure will result, as well as facilitating the ready nailing of the end pieces to the corner posts. The arcuate recesses 8 im the side bars, are provided for the insertion of the fingers, so that the assembled ends of the crate may be easily removed from the nailing frame. It is to be understood, in this connection, that the frame may be provided in a desired size, in order that boxes of various sizes may be quickly and easily assembled.
hat is claimed is:
1. A nailing frame for crates, including a pair of angle members formed with vertical walls, and integral angle walls extending therefrom, each of said walls being formed with laterally extending flanges arranged in spaced parallel relation, side members having the end portions inserted between the spaced flanges of said angle member and secured thereto, for holding sad angle members in spaced parallel relation, a central spacing bar secured to the angle wall of said angle member, and a plurality of spacing members removably and adjustably mounted on the angular walls of said angle member adapted for positioning end pieces in spaced relation on said frame, said angle members being adapted to receive corner posts ofsubstantially triangular cross section for positioning corresponding faces thereof in position to re ceive end pieces to be nailed thereto.
2. A nailing form for an end frame, such as is used in the make upof a shipping crate, said form comprising a pair of duplicatcpost rece'ving members, each member being substantially V-shaped in cross sec tion and being open at its opposite ends, the side walls of the member being fashioned at the end to provide angularly directed flanges, the adjacent ones of which are spaced apart, a pair of connecting strips having their opposite ends d'sposed between the pairs of flanges provided at the opposite ends of said members and connecting said members together and closing the ends of the same, a pair of spacing clips for each member, said clips being adjustably mounted on the inner walls of the members and being provided with upstanding fingers between which a portion of the end frame of the crate is adapted to be confined, and means connecting said clips with said memhere.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. I
ERNEST M. ROSE.
