BUILDING-BLOCK MOLD.
Application filed February 23, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPI-I W. BRAGSTAD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Canton, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building-Block Molds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to building block molds and the object thereof is to provide a mold of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth for molding simultaneously a plurality of sectional blocks of the same or of different contour, and with the sections of each block coupled together by a plurality of anchors.
A further object of the invention isto provide a building block mold in a manner as hereinafter set forth and claimed, by which a sectional block can be manufactured out of slush concrete, making thereby a waterproof block.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a building block mold which shall be comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, enabling the molding of a plurality of sectional blocks simultaneously, conveniently manipulated and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to'which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a building block mold in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan from the bottom section of the mold. Fig. 3 is a top section of the mold. Fig. 4: is a section on line XX of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 5 is an end view.

use. The mold not only comprises a bottom section but also a top section which when the mold is in operative position is detachably connected to the bottom section. The construction of mold as shown is adapted for manufacturing sectional building blocks, with the sections of the block coupled together by suitable anchors. The bottom section of the mold is adapted for molding the outer or face section of the block while the top section of the mold is used for molding the inner section of the block.
The bottom mold section comprises a base formed from a series of longitudinally-extending members 2 and mounted upon said bottom is a rectangular frame formed of side bars 3 and end bars a. The bars 4 overlap the bars 3 at their ends and are detachably-connected to the bars 3 and also to the bottom 2 by the removable pins 5. The bars 3, 4, form the sides and ends of the lower mold section, while the members 2 form the bottom of the lower mold section, the latter having mounted thereon a face plate 6 for polishing or ornamenting the face of the block. The frame formed by the bars 3, 4, is divided into a series of compartments through the medium of transversely-extending partitions 7, which are in dicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and which are of a contour similar to that of the contour of the block sections. The partitions 7 have their ends secured to or secured in the side bars 3 of the frame and as the block section is formed with an angular extension as indicated at S. in Fig. 4, each of the partitions 7 is also provided with an extension of like contour. The partitions are spaced equi-distant throughout the frame and the outer partitions of the series abut against the end bars 1 of the frame. The top wall of the bottom mold section is formed by a longitudinally-extending fiat outer plate 9, and a longitudinallyextending intermediate angle-shaped plate 11 which is oppositelydisposed with respect to the plate 10. The plate 9 as well as the plate 10 is secured in position as shown in Figs. 4: and 5 by hinged hooks 12 which are carried by the bars 3. The plate 9 has its inner edge formed with a series of pairs of notches 13, a notch of each pair being positioned in proximity to a partition 7 as well as positioning means for the rectangular anchors 14: which are disposed that each sectional block when completed will be provided with a pair of anchors. The intermediate plate 11 is mounted upon the inner end of the plate 9 and abuts against the angular portions of the partitions 7 and is secured in such position by a plurality of clamps 15, these latter also engaging the angle-plate 10 as said plate also abuts against the angular portions of the partitions 7, as the clamps 15 are of inverted U-shape.
The top section of the mold comprises a rectangular frame formed of angle-shaped side bars 16 and flat end bars 17. The side bars 16 are provided with end lugs 18 which are apertured and have mounted thereon the end bars 17. The side bars 16 and end bars 17 are detachably-connected together by the removable pins 19 which extend through the ends of the bars 17 and apertured lugs 18. Secured to the inner face of one of the side bars 16 is a longitudinally-extending angleshaped plate 20 having its inner end terminating in a depending L-shaped extension 21 and secured to the inner face of the other side bar 16 is an outer angle-shaped plate 22. Arranged against the inner face of each of the bars 16 is a series of spacing blocks 23 and abutting against the said blocks 23 are plates 20, 22. The blocks 23 and bars 16 are secured to the angle- shaped plates 20, 22, by the hold-fast devices 25. The blocks 23 do not abut against each other nor against the bars 17 and the plates 20 and 22 are slotted, whereby the seats 26 are provided for the ends of the partitions 27 which are mounted in the top section of the mold and are oppositely-disposed with respect to the partitions 7. The partitions 27 are so arranged as to be in vertical alinement with the partitions 7 and the angularshaped portions of the partitions 27 are engaged by the L-shaped extension 21 of the plate 20. Seated upon the inner end of the plate 22 and engaging the L-shaped portion of the plate 20 and also abutting against the angle-shaped portions of the partitions is an intermediate angle-shaped plate 28. The lower portion of the L-shaped extension 21 of the angle-shaped plate 20 is formed with notches 29 which are in alinement with the notches 13 and through which extends one side of the anchors 14:. The angle-shaped plate 22 has its inner end provided with a series of notches 30 through which extends the other side'of the anchors 14. The plates 24: and outer partitions 27 form respectively the sides and ends of the top section of the mold, while the outer plates 20 and 22 and intermediate plate 28 form the bottom of the top section of the mold.
The top section of the mold is detachably connected to the bottom section through the medium of a series of depending V-shaped connecting members 30, which at their upper ends are secured by the hold-fast devices 31 to the side bars 16 and at their lower ends extend in sockets 32 formed in the side bars 3 of the bottom section of the mold. The members 30 are twisted in such manner that the lower ends thereof will extend into the sockets 32 in View of the fact that the sockets are not arranged in the same plane as the upper end of the members 30. The members 30 at their lower ends are each formed with an opening through which is adapted to extend a removable attaching member 33, in the form of a pin. The members 33 extend through the members 30 and engage in the base whereby the two sections of the mold are detachably-connected together.
The manner of molding the sectional block by the form of mold as shown is as follows,-the material is placed in the bottom section of the mold until it is flush with the top of the bars 3, 4. The plates 9 and 10 are then mounted in position and secured by the hooks 12. The anchors 14 are then pushed into the concrete and positioned properly by extending one side through the notches 13. The intermediate plate is then mounted upon the outer plate 9 and against the angular portions of the partitions 7. The intermediate plate 11 is slipped through one end of the machine. The clamps 15 are then mounted in operative position whereby the intermediate plate 11, end plate 10 and angular portions of the partitions 7 will be clamped together and this part of the section filled with material. The top section of the mold with the intermediate plate 28 removed, is then connected to the bottom section, the intermediate plate 28 is then mounted in position and the material placed in the top section of the mold. When the top section is mounted in position, the anchors extend through the outer plate 22 and the L-shaped extension 21 of the plate 20. After the material has been set, the sections of the block formed, the top section is detached and removed'from that section of the block formed in the top section, the anchors supporting said section of the block. After the top section has been removed and knocked down, the bottom section has the elements thereof detached from the front section of the block. The block is then removed and allowed to dry and then used for the purpose for which it is intended.
What I claim is:
1. A building block mold comprising an' outer plates and an intermediate angleshaped plate, one of said outer plates of the top section having an L-shaped depending extension adapted to be engaged by the angle-shaped intermediate plate of the top section, said top section having its bottom provided with clearances for the passage of anchors and said bottom section having its top provided with clearances for the passage of anchors for connecting together the sections of the block formed by the top and bottom sections of the mold.
2. A building block mold comprising an upper and a lower section, means for detachably connecting the upper section to the lower section, each of said sections adapted to mold a section of a block, said bottom section provided with a top and said lower section provided with a bottom opposing the top of the lower section, transversely-mo tending partitions mounted in each of said sections, and each of said sections provided with openings for the passage of anchors for coupling the sections of the block together.
3. A mold for manufacturing a plurality of sectional building blocks simultaneously comprising an upper mold section, a lower mold section, means carried by the upper section and detachably connected to the lower section for supporting the upper section and coupling the sections together, transversely-extending partitions mounted in each of said sections, and each of said sections provided with means for the passage of anchors for coupling the sections of the block together.
4. A mold for manufacturing a plurality of sectional building blocks simultaneously comprising an upper section and a lower section, said upper section having an open top and a closed bottom and said lower section having a closed bottom and a closed top,
means for detachably connecting said sections together, transversely-extending partitions arranged in each of said sections and with the partitions of one section disposed in vertical alinement with respect to the partitions in the other section, and said up per section having its bottom and said lower section having its top provided with openings for the passage of anchors for coupling the sections of the blocks together.
5. A mold for manufacturing a plurality of sectional building blocks simultaneously comprising an upper and a lower mold section, each provided with a bottom, transverselyextending partitions mounted in each of said sections, said lower mold section provided with a top, said upper mold section having its bottom and said lower mold section having its top provided with a means for the passage of anchors for coupling the two sections of the block together.
6. A mold for manufacturing a plurality of building blocks simultaneously comprising an upper and a lower mold section, means detachably-connected to the lower mold section for supporting the upper mold section, each of said sections provided with a bottom and said upper section provided with a top, the bottom of the upper section and the top of the lower section corresponding in contour to the inner face of a section of a block, the bottom of said upper section and the top of said lower section provided with means for the passage of anchors for coupling the two sections of the blocks together.
