Description

W. TAYLOR.-
v Lubricators for Picker-Spindles. [QC-158,189. Patented Dec.29,i874.
v Nifmwsses v UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE.
WILLIAM TAYLOR, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATORS FOR PlCKER-SPINDLES.
Specification forming palt of Letters Patent No. 158,] 89, dated December 29, 1874; application filed October 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TAYLOR, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Lubricator for Picker Rods or Spindles for Looms, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the lubrication of picker-spindles for looms. The peculiarity consists in making the picker-spindle hollow, with one or more openings to the exterior sliding surface, said openings being provided with some absorbing material, like sponge or loose fibrous matter, which will serve to draw the oil with which the spindle is filled to its outer surface, and thus bring it in contact with the triction-surface. The movement of the picker on the spindle will serve to distribute the oil evenly on the friction-surface.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of my invention as applied to a picker-spindle of a loom. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same.
Let A represent the plate, to which the picker-spindle H is attached by studs B and E. As usual on looms the boss E is provided with a set-screw, F, which serves to fasten the spindle H in place, as shown in Fig. 3. The spindle H is provided with the usual bufl'ers (l. D is a picker, made in any approved form, and slides on the spindle H in the usual manner. The spindleH is made hollow, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and is to be filled with oil. L is a screw-plug, which may be removed when it is desirable to fill the spindle H with oil. At K an opening is made from the interior of the spindle to the exterior. This opening is filled with sponge or some similar fibrous material having a capillary nature. This material at K extends into the interior of the spindle H, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the oil is always in contact with it.
The absorbing material at K, being always fully saturated with oil, and projecting somewhat above the surface of the spindle, delivers some of the oil to the picker D at each passage, the action of the picker being, as it comes into contact with the saturated material at K, to compress it, and thus force out some of the oil. This oil, being forced out of the absorbent at K onto the interior surface of the picker, is carried'by the picker and distributed over the entire surface of the spindle, thus thoroughly lubricating it.
I claim as my invention-' In, a loom, the oilholding picker rod or spindle, provided with the absorbent K, in combination with the picker D, all operating together substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM TAYLOR. Witnesses:
