FEEDING DEVICE FOR PRESSES.
Application filed June so, 1923. Serial No. 648,846.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Funn S. ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New London, in the county of New London anilState of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding names for Presses, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to. feeding devices for presses and the printing. presses of various kinds and also to cutting and creasing presses. lVherc shcetsof stock are fed by hand to a press, if the stock is thick the pile of sheets on the feed table is used up very quickly and it is sometimes necessary to keep a man loading the feed board with stock almost continually in order to keep the feeder supplied with stock. provide a feed table long enough to receive two stacks of sheets at a time, one stack fromwhich the feeder takes the sheets and one stack to be moved up into feeding position when the first stack has been used up or fed to the press. As these stacks are sometimes weighing a ton or more, it is difficult to move them manually into feeding position. The obinvention is to provide power operated means for advancing the stacks into position ready for feeding. I provide manually controlled means for throwing the power means into and out of operation so that the press feeder may advance a new stackinto position at any time by power means. Thus, the stack may be moved into position quickly regardless of its weight and without manual labor. l he invention in providing power means for advancing feeding.
In the drawing forming part of this application:
Figure 1 is a sideelevation of part of a printing press showing my invention applied theretoyan'd Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
In the drawing'l have shown only such parts of afiat bed press as are necessary to illustrate one application of my invention. p0
Herein I have shown part of the side. frame 35'of thepress, the impression cylinder 36 to whiclr'the feeder feeds the sheets, the platform 32 on which the feeder usually the feed board bracket 4. I
have shown a pile or stack 1 of sheets from same is applicable to It has been common tothe stacks into is a sprocket which the feeder takes the sheets, this stack being placed nearest the feeding point; and
behind this stack there is a second 01' reserve stack 2 which is ready to be movedupto the position occupied by stack 1 when the latter has'been consumed. The back leaf 5 of the feed table is here shown as horizontally disposed in accordance with former practice.
At 3 I have shown a plurality of endless parallel belts or chains which travel around pulleys or sprockets 6 and 7. These sprockets are mounted on shafts 8 and 9 respectively disposed near opposite endsv of the feed table. The sprockets 6, 7 project up through slots 10 and 11 in the feed table so that the upper runs of the belts or chains 3 lay flat on the feed board, and the latter may have a metal surface plate for the chains to travel on if desired.
. I'have shown girts 12 and 13 for holdin the table brackets 4 steady. At 14 is one 0% the re ular shafts of the press and from this venient location, and this shaft is. driven continuously from the shaft 14 by means of a chain 16, engaging over thesprockets 15 and 17 arranged on the shafts 14 and 18. There is a second auxiliary shaft 22 extendin across the press and this has fixed to it u. ever arm 28 which is pivotally connected-with a foot treadle 29 which projects up through the platform 32. The treadle has a foot piece 31 and it is normally held in raised position by acompremion spring 30 arran ed under the member 31.
There 1s an arm 21 fixed to the shaft 22 and this arm carries a movable shaft 24.
There is preferably a duplicate of this arm 21 on the opposite side of the press. There is a. friction pulley or gear 20 on the shaft 24, which is adapted to be 'moved into and out of operative engagement withthe gear or friction pulley 19 on the shaft 18. There 25 secured to the shaft 24 and the endless chain 26 .travels over I this sprocket and over a sprocket 27, for the urse of transmitting power from the s aft 24 to the shaft- 9 and thereby operating the chains or belts 3.
Operation: 'Whenthe feeder hasfed all the sheets from the stack 1 he presses down on the member 31 to depress the treadle 29. This swings over the s aft 24 and throws the gear 20 into mesh with the gear 19. The power derived from the shaft 14 through the sprockets 15, 17 and chain 16, operates through the gears 19 and 20, and through I newal stacks into position and stacks of any weight may thus be handled quickly without manual labor. 7 I
It is obvious that belts maybe used in place of chains and that pulleys may be used in place of sprockets, if desired. I
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a press of a feed table, movable means on whlch a stack of sheets is adapted to rest and to be advanced into feeding position, includingendless flexi- 1,oe1,4a1
biemembers, a' gear, and means for operating it from a shaft of the press,a second'gear adapted to be thrown into and out of mesh with said first gear, and means operated by said second ,gear for ope-rating said endless flexible" members, and manually operated means for throwing said gears into and out of mesh.
2. The combination with a press, of a feed table having apertures therein, revolvable members protruding into said apertures, endless members traveling over said revolvable members and having one run traveling over the surface of said table to receive a stack of sheets thereon, a revolvable member continuously operated from the press, a second revolvable member and a treadle for throwing it into operation with said continuously revolvable member,
- and means for transmitting power from said second revolvable member to said endless members-for the purpose set forth.
Si ned at New London, county of New Lon on and State of Connecticut, this 10 day of April 1923.
FRED S. ENGLISH.
