LUTHER MERRILL AND JOHN C. MERRILL, OF MILLVILLE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,109, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LUTHER MERRILL and JOHN C. MERRILL, of Millville, in the county of Clayton and Stat-e of Iowa, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fence-Gate 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripton thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
llhe nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a perspective view.
A and B represent the two i'enceposts between which the gate is hung. On the inner side of the post A is secured a plate, O, provided with perforated ears a a, al al, and a2, as shown in the drawing. The gate is constructed in the following manner: D represents a board of any suitable dimensions, around the inner end of which is fastened a plate, D1, holding a vertical rod or pin, b, along the edge ofthe board. This rod or pin is inserted in the ears a a on the plate O, thereby forinin g together the hinge upon which the gate turns. On the outer end of the board D is fastened a plate, D2, which extends asuitable distance above and below the board. From each end ofthe plate D2 a Wire, d, is stretched horizontally to, and connected with, the corresponding ears a] on the plate C, and on said wires are fastened a number of sharp-pointed brads, e c. Through the outer end of the board D, and through the plate D2, is passed a rod or Wire, h, the ends of which are extended, one on each side of the gate, up to the ear a2 at the upper end of the plate O, forming braces to prevent the gate from sagging. At the outer end of the gate is a suitable latch, f, for fastening it to the post B.
A gate of this construction is easily put up, is comparatively cheap, and also durable, there being nothing liable to get out of order.
The brads e on the wires d will keep off stock from the gate that would otherwise rub against the same and injure it. These wires we intend to support by means of one or more vertical cross-bars or straps, G, according to the length of the gate.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gate herein described, consisting of the hinged frame-work D D2, and having the bottom and top barbed wires d e secured at one end to the plate D2, and at the other to one of the gate-posts, and supported by means of the brace-wire h, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LUTHER MERRILL.
JOHN C. MERRILL.
