IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 158,034, dated December 22, 1874; application filed June 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN N. CLARK, of Wellington, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to a ventilator for railway-cars, the same being constructed and applied to a plate which is adapted to be secured in the window of a car, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, showing the ventilator attached to a car-window. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This ventilator is attached to a plate of metal or piece of wood, A, which is fitted into the window, as seen in Fig. 1, where B B represent the window-casings. O is an expansible funnel or air-receiver, which is placed outside the window, as represented in Fig. 2. D is the reservoir attached to the inside of the piece A. Water is placed in this reservoir, and it may contain any other purifying or disinfecting substance, in contact with which the air is brought in passing through the reservoir. The reservoir receives the air from the tube E, which tube passes through the piece A. The water and other cleansing material are introduced into the reservoir through the opening F. The air is discharged from the reservoir through the pipe G. The end of this pipe is flaring, as seen at H, in whichis placed a funnel of less diameter, which leaves an annular opening, I, around the funnel for the discharge of the air. J is another dischargeopening in the pipe G, in which is'a perforated plate, K. This opening is closed by the cover L when not required for use.
The funnel O, which is reversible in position, is formed in two parts, which are hinged at the smaller end, and have a slot-and-setscrew connection at their large end, as shown in Fig. 2, which renders the funnel expansible, and thus adapts it for receiving more or less air in a given time, according as needs or conditions require.
The whole apparatus may be readily removed t'rom one window to another, or otherwise shifted as desired, in view of the funnel and tank being attached to the plate A in the manner specified.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved ventilating attachment for railway-cars, formed of the two part expansible air-receiving funnel O, water-tank D, discharge-pipe G, having funnel H, with annular opening I, and perforated at K, said devices being appliedfito plate A, as and for the purpose specified.
