Description

(No Model.)
J. F. LEGATE.
GINDER AND DUST ARRESTER."
"Patented July 19,1881;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE."
JAMES F. LEGATE, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
CINDER- AND DUST ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 244,630, dated July 19, 1881.
' Application filed April 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom zt may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. LEGATE, of Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth, and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Oinder and Dust Arresters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has forits objects to provide a device that may be placed or fitted in a carwindow, and which will receive and arrest all sparks, cinders, and dust, and deliver pure air to the interior of the car. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of my improved device, with a portion of the outer wall broken away, showing the interior Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view of the device; and Fig. 3 a sectional view of the funnel detached.
The letter A indicates a box or chamber, constructed of any suitable material and of such size and-shape as to fit within the lower part of a car-window. The said box or chamber is divided by means of a foraminous partition, 1, into two compartments, B and (J.
y D indicates a door located at the top of the box or chamber, which may be opened or closed at will.
The letter F indicates afunnel, which is constructed with an interior telescopic section, E, whichc'an be moved in and out and held in any desired position by means of set-screws a. The said funnel connects, by means of apipe,
G, with the interior of the lower compartment, 0, of the box A, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The letter H indicates 'a bent pipe extending from the lower compartment, 0, of the'box or chamberA outside of the same.
In practice the chamber or box A is fitted or 'set in the lower part of a car-window, the body of said box or chamber. extending outside, with the funnel projectinglaterally from such box or chamber. The lower compartment, (3, is filled with water up to the level of the inner end'of the tube H. The sparks, cinders, and dust, with the external-air, enter the car through the funnel JL ipe G, passing under the w ter'iiifi mpartment (l, which will arrest and hold all impurities, permitting the air to pass upward through the foraminous partition and into thecar when the door]) is opened. The pipe H serves to permit any superfluous water which may find its way into the chamber 0 in rain-storms to escape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of the box or chamber A, the foraminous partition I, the funnel E and its extensible interior section, the pipe G, leadin g into the compartment 0, and the pipe H, all arranged with respect to each other substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses this 30th day of April, 1881.
