Description

W. H. BEACH. K
Hoisting-Apparatus for Earth-Angers.
N0.|58,016. Patented Dec. 22,18 74 I S illflllflfi V J I mun 1 I WITNESSES. I NVEN TOR Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BEACH, OF HAMBURG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING APPARATUS FOR EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,016., dated December 22, 1874; application filed June 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. BEACH, of Hamburg, in the county of Fremont and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Digging Apparatus; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a combination of pulleys, chain-wheel, and auger shaft, with a chain passing around said wheel and pulleys, for hoisting and lowering the auger; and also in the manner in which this device is thrown in and out of gear, all as hereinafter more fully set forth. 1
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a horse-power for wellaugers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with the top platform removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of the chain-wheel.
A represents the bottom frame, made square in form, and provided with inclined corner posts or standards B B, supporting the platform or bed-piece C. To the under side of the platform 0 is secured a frame, E, which forms the lower bearing for the downward-projectin g part a of the hub of a chain-wheel, D. This wheel is placed horizontally under the platform C, and its hub on the upper side forms a bearing, 1), which fits in the lower end of a tube, G, inserted in and passing through the platform G. The lower end of the hub a b is made square, and slightly tapering on the interior, as shown in Fig. 3. Through this hub, and through the tube G, passes the ordinary auger-shaft H, which, upon its lower end, is
provided with a square and slightlytapering coupling-box, d. On one of the standards, B, is a Windlass, I, from which a cord, f, passes over a pulley, 7b, in the frame E, and to the end of said cord is attached a hook, 6. Around the chain-wheel D is passed a chain, m, one end of which passes around a pulley, n, and the other end around two pulleys, n and 01?, all arranged as shown in the frame E.
When the auger is loaded and ready to hoist, the shaft H is disconnected therefromand raised by the Windlass I with the cord f, until the box at on the end of the shaft enters the hub a in the wheel. Then, by starting the horse, which is hitched to the usual sweep or lever J, the wheel D is turned, whereby, by means of the chain m, attached to said anger, the anger is drawn out. The shaft is then lowered out of the hub in the wheel, thus throwing the wheel out of gear, and the auger can be lowered, the wheel revolving around the shaft.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the chain-wheel D, having its extended hub a made square, and tapering on the interior, and the shaft H, provided with a square tapering coupling-box, d, on its lower end, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the wheel D, with square and tapering extended hub, and the shaft H, with square and tapering couplingboX, d, of the chain on and pulleys n, it and n, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of May, 187 4.
WILLIAM H. BEACH.
