Description
A l hay-stacker.
Ulvrrrn) STATES GYRUS H. KIRKPATRICK, OF SUGAR GROVE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT iN HAYA-STACKING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,967, dated July 30, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Hay-Stacking Apparatus, invented by CYRUs H. KIRKPATRIGK, of Sugar Grove, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana.
Figure l is a side view of my improved Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line m w, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-V sponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved apparatus for stacking hay, simple in construction, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, and more convenient in use and effective in operation than hay-staekers constructed in the ordinary manner; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described.
W A is thebase or platform of the appara-tus,
which is designed to be staked or otherwise secured to the ground at the side of the stack, or of the place where the stack is to be built. B is a post, the lower end of which is rmly secured to the platform A, and to the upper' end of which is pivoted a crane, C. To the lower end ofthe postB and to the lirlatforin A is attached a iianged socket, D, through which the post B passes, and which 1s designed to serve as a journal for the driv- `in`gwheel E, to which is vattached the sweep F, to which the horse is attached, and a lead ing-pole, G, to which the horses halter is tied. Upon the upper side of the rim of the lwheel E are formed beveled teeth, which mesh the shaft I is attached, or upon Vit is formed, a drum, J, to which is attached one end of the rope K, whiohpasses over the guidepulleys L attached to the craneO, and to its other end is attached a fork, M, for raising the hay. To the end of the shaft I that projects at the other side of the post B is ateters, so that by adjusting the ycord O to wind upon one or the other of said parts the crane may be turned quicker or slower, ac-
cording to the height of the stack. The time Y at which the cra-ne Gis swung around may also be regulated by giving the oord O, when slack, one or more turns around the drum N, or throwing .o' one or more turns from said drum. The outer end of lthe hub of the gearwheel H is grooved to receive the forked end ofthe bar Q, which is bent to pass around the gear-wheel H and drum J, and its inner end is pivoted to the lever R, the end of which is pivoted to the lower part of the post B, so that by operating the said lever the gear-wheel H may be thrown out of and into gear with the gear-wheel E. The lever B may be provided with a cord or cords eX- tending to the pitcher, so that the pitcher, without `moving from his place, can throw the gear-wheel H out of and into gear with the gear-wheel E. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The arrangement in a hay-stacker of the geanwheels E H, shaft I, drum J and rope K, with respect to each other and the base A, post B, and crane C, to enable the fork to be raised and lowered while the horse advances continuously, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. 'I he arrangement of the drum N and oord O, with respect to the shaft I, post B, and crane C, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The arrangement -ofthe bar Q and lever B, with respect to the gear-Wheel I i, shaft I, and post B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
GYRUS H. KIRKPATRIGK.
