ROLLING SHUTTER.
Application filed October 29, 1924. Serial- No. 746,629.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON L. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Shutters; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rolling shutters of the type comprising a plurality of me tallic slats jointed together at their longitudinal edges and which are usually provided with so-called end-locks in the form of metallic members attached to the oppo site ends of the slats with a part thereo overlying the ends of adjacent slats to hold them against longitudinal movement.
In the operation of fire shutters equipped with these end-locks, the latter have a tendency to knife into each other during the rolling of the shutter and so cause the latter to coil of? to one side. This lateral or endwise shifting of the coils of the shutters is obviously objectionable in that it tends to cause the shutter to roll larger at one end than the other and also to interfere with the free working of the shutters in their guides. It has therefore been the main object of the present invention to provide a simple and eflicient means whereby the 0bjectionable feature referred to will be avoided. This object I attain by providing the shutters with means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutters whereby the latter will be positively guided in a straight line during their opening and closing movements. These interlocking means, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, comprise end-lock members formed with tongues and grooves at their opposite longitudinal edges extending in a direction lengthwise of the shutters for interlocking engagement with each other .upon the rolling of the shutters, such engagement of the members acting to guide the shutters during their rolling movement and lock the same against lateral movement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be referred to in the detailed description of the invention which follows.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is an end view, in section and elevation, of a roller with a fire shutter thereon equipped with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of two slats of a fire shutter equipped with my invention, the same being in position between the opposite walls of a channel guide shown in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one end of the shutter slats illustrated in Fig. 2, showing the grooves in the front side of the end lock members attached to said slats.
Fig. 4 is a view of the same slats and attached end-lock members, as viewed from the right in Fig. 3 and from the rear in Fig. 2, the channel guide of Fig. 2 being shown in this view in elevation.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section on the f line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are side, edge and end views respectively, of an end-lock member embodying a modified form of the invention.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The shutter here shown is of usual construction, the same being made up of a plurality of metallic slats 2 which are trans versely double concavo-convex and formed at their longitudinal edges with oppositely turned hooks 3, 3, for pivotally jointed connection with adjoining slats whereby to provide a flexible shutter that may be readily wound about a supporting and operating roller. This roller, which also may be of any suitable or desired construction, is made up of an inner supporting shaft 4 and an outer pipe shaft 5 mounted on the inner shaft through the medium of interposed bushings, the said outer shaft having collars, such as 6, clamped thereon adjacent its opposite ends to which the upper end of the shutter is attached, as by means of the fastening screws 7.
As a means for guiding the shutters in their opening and closing movements as effected by the roller, the opposite edges thereof are loosely fitted for sliding movement in channel guides, such as 8, which are secured to the opposite walls of the opening in which the shutters are fitted.
The end-locks for holding the slats against endwise movement relatively to each other each comprise a head portion 10 adapted to be attached to the end of a slat with one end thereof extending laterally beyond the end of the adjoining slat for holding engagement therewith, in the manner clearl shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. These end-10c members may be attached to the shutter slats in any suitable or desired way, the same as here shown being provided with laterally extended shanks 12 which are secured to the slats at the inner side thereof by rivets 14.
In accordance with the present invention the heads 10 of these end-lock members are preferably formed to extend at their opposite longitudinal edges beyond the front and rear sides of the shutter and are provided with tongues at one edge, as at 15, and with grooves in the opposite edge, as at 16, these tongues and grooves extending in the direction of normal movement of the shutter so that upon the winding of the shutter about theroller the tongues of the members of one 'coil will engage within the grooves in the members of an adjacent coil and so cause the a shutter to move up in a straight line and be wound evenly about the roller, the interlocking of the tongue and grooved members holding the coils of the shutter against lateral or endwise movement during the winding up operation and subsequently assuring the unwinding of the shutter in a straight line when being lowered.
As the upper end of the shutter is connected directly with the roller, the first coil thereof will ordinarily be wound evenly about the roller without the aid of separate guiding members. In some instances, however, it may be desirable to guide the shutter in its winding movement from the start thereof.
To provide for this I may form the roller collars 6 with end shoulders 18 for cooperation with the tongues of the end-lock members to hold the latter and connected shutter against lateral movement on the roller during the initial winding thereof, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 1. After the winding of the first coil about the roller, the endlock members of the successive coils will then engage with each other to guide the shutter in its movement and lock the wound coils thereof against endwise movement on the roller in the manner before described.
The tongues and grooves of the end members may be arranged at either side of said members as may be most expedient in different cases. As shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive the grooves are at the front side of the members and the tongues at the rear side, while in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the reverse of this arrangement is shown, the tongues 15' being at the front side and the grooves 16' at the rear side.
The heads 10 of the end members extending beyond the front and rear sides of the shutter as shown engage the opposite walls of the channel guides during rolling movement of the shutter and so hold thelatter from contact with said walls, thus reducing the friction between the engaging surfaces during the rolling of the shutter to a minimum. I have here shown and described in invention in one simple and efficient embodiment thereof, but I wish it to be understood that the same ma be more or less substantiallymodified wlthout de arture from the spirit thereof asdefined in the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1-In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats, and members on said shutter having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
2. In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats, and members on said shutter aligned in the direction of rolling movement of the shutter and having means for interlocking engag ment upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
3. In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats, and members attached to the opposite ends of said slats having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
4. In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality 'of jointed slats, and end-lock members secured to the ends of said slats with parts thereof overlapping the ends of adjoining slats and having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
5. In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats, and members on said shutter extending at opposite edges beyond. the front and rear sides of the shutter and having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
6. In combination, a rolling shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats, and
members on said shutter having tongues and grooves at their opposite edges extending in the direction of movement of the shutter and adapted for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against lateral movement.
7. In combination, a roller, a shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats and connected at one end with said, roller, and members on said shutter extending at opposite edges beyond the front and rear sides of the shutter, said roller and members having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against endwise movement on the roller.
8. In combination, a roller, a shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats and connected at one end with said roller, and members on said shutter extending at opposite edges beyond the front and rear sides of the shutter, said roller and members having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the latter against endwise movement on the roller and said members also having means for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the coils of the latter against endwise movement.
9. In combination, a roller, a shutter composed of a plurality of jointed slats and connected at one end with said roller, channel guides into which the opposite edges of the shutter extend for sliding movement, and members at the opposite ends of the shutter slats and within the channel guides formed to extend beyond the front and rear sides of the shutter for engagement with the guide walls, said members having tongues and grooves at their opposite guide engaging surfaces for interlocking engagement upon the rolling of the shutter to lock the coils of the latter against-endwise movement.
