END MEMBER FOR THE SLATS OF FIRE-SHUTTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 22, 1912.
Patented Dec. 9,1913.
SeriaI No. 685,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM M. BnUNsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of ()hio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in End Members for the Sluts of Fire-Shutters, of which the following is a specification.
Some forms of looks or members applied to the ends of metallic slats used in the construction of rolling fire resisting shutters knife into each other causing the roll to become larger at one end than the other and preventing the free working of the shutters.
The chief object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of lock or end member whereby the diflioulty referred to is obviated and the invention is embodied in the construction herein shown and described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings liigure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the ends of two slats provided with such devices. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line w0a Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows in section and end view a roller having a portion of fire shutter with the slats thereof equipped with such looks or end members.
In the views characters 5 designate the slats which are usually transversly concavoconvex and are ordinarily each provided with oppositely turned hook members 5 and 5 along its two edges for connecting them together to form the flexible sheet constituting the shutter proper. The end lock comprises a head portion 6 having a concaved shank 6 that fits in the concaved side of the slat at its end and is riveted thereto as seen at 7. The ends of the head of the end lock are extended laterally beyond the shank so as to form abutments to prevent the longitudinal movement of the slats when such locks are connected to the opposite ends of alternate slats in the shutter as well understood.
According to the present invention as herein shown I cast with or apply to the concavo-convex shank of the end lock a segmental web 8 extending transversely across the concave side of the shank of the end lock. Said web is located well within the edge of the shutter so that when the shutter is wound upon a roller the straight edge of the web shall contact with the roller or if the roller be provided with collars 9 with such collar and support the slats out of contact therewith or substantially as shown in Fig. 8. Such webs also, when one coil is superposed on another, support the slats and end locks out of contact with each other in such manner as will prevent the knifing of the end looks with each other and the irregular coiling of the shutter heretofore referred to. The ends of the slats between those provided with end locks can be provided with members 10 like the shank of the end locks, said members having no heads but having webs 8 like the webs 8 of the end locks. hen one coil of shutter is wound around another the webs 8 and 8 being well within the inner edges of the shutter rest upon the convex or outer sides of the slats of the next inner coil. When such webs have straight edges as depicted in Fig. 2 and stand vertically when the shutter is hanging, said. webs also serve if traveling in proximity to the wall of a guiding channel as seen at 11 Fig. 2, and by broken lines Fig. I serve as an effective means for preventing the passage of flame and sparks around the edge of the shutter.
What I claim is- 1. An end member for a slat of a rolling fire shutter consisting of a shank constructed to be applied to the inner side of the slat, said shank having a transverse projection or web remote from the ends of the shank.
2. An end member for a slat of a rolling fire shutter consisting of a shank to be applied to the end portion of a slat and having a head or projection at one end to afford an abutment to prevent longitudinal movement in one direction of an adjoined slat and also a web or projection inset and spaced from said head to contact with the side of another slat to keep the coils regularly disposed on versely of the slat and adapted to contact each other. with another slat and keep the coils of the 3. A spacing member for a slat of a rollshutter spaced, substantially as described. ing fire shutter consisting of a metallic body VILLIAM M. BRUNST. 5 having a concave side, said metallic body I Vitnesses:
adapted to be applied to the slat and having RAY LOVELL, a Segmental web in its concave side trans- E. H. MOCLOUD.
