COMBINED BALT AND PEPPER SHAKER.
Application filed August 21, 1925. Serial No. 51,575.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LORNE SHAW, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Walk'erville, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Combined Salt and Pepper Shaker, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention, broadly speaking, is to provide a combined pepper and salt shaker having a shaker top through which either pepper or salt may be discharged as required. Other objects and advantages will be mentioned as the specification proceeds.
The preferred manner of carrying out the invention and the construction I have found most practical is hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawln'gs, 1 designates the main body portion of the shaker which extends from the base plate 2 to the inclined annular wall 3, which is provided with ports 4 and 5 in proximity to its inner edge. A tubular member 6 extends from the base plate 2 to the inner edge of the annular wall 3 so that the compartments 7 and 8, which are divided by vertical walls 9 and 10, are located round the outside of the tubular member. The sides 11 of the"main body portion continue above the inclined annular wall 3 and at the upper end receive the shaker top 12 which is usually secured by means of ascrew thread. 13 indicates a discharge chamber between the upper ends of the compartments and the shaker top.
Through the tubular member 6 a rod 14 is provided which has a closure member 15 at its upper end, and at its lower end an arm 16 is secured by which the rod may be turned. The movement of the arm 16, and therefore of the closure member 14, is limited b the width of the slot 18 through the skirt 19 through which the arm 16 extends, Between the underside of the base plate 2 and the top of the arm 16 a helical spring 17 is arranged which exerts downward pressure on the. arm and holds the closure member in contact with the upper surface of the annular inclined wall. 23 indicates a pin by which the arm 16 is secured to the lower end of the rod 14.
The width of the closure member 15 is such that at least one of the orts 4 or 5 is always closed, and when the c osure member 15 in mid position as shown in Figure 2 both ports are shut. The dotted lines 15 in Figure 2 show the position of the closure member when the port 4 is open. If desired stop 20 may be supplied on the upper surface of the annular inclined wall to limit the movement of the closure member, in which case the width of the slot 18 will not govern ghe range of movement of the closure mem- The compartments 7 and 8 may either be filled through the ports 4 and 5 or else through filler holes 21 and 22 in the underside of the compartments.
It will be noted that the ports are located quite close to the inner edge of the annular wall 3, and that the latter slopes 'downtowards the centre, so that after the shaker has been used the tendency will be for any pepper or salt which has passed through the port 4 or 5 into the discharge chamber 13 but not through the shaker top to return to its compartment.
While in the foregoing I have described the preferred form of construction of my invention it is understood that the embodiment herein described is susceptible to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combined pepper and salt shaker, the combination of a main body portion having a substantially centrally located tubular member arranged vertically therethrough and divided vertically into two compartments, a common discharge chamber above said compartments, a wall between said compartments and said discharge chamber in which tubular member terminates, said wall having ports therethrough one from each compartment, a closure member adapted to move over said ports, a rod through said tubular member connected at its upper end to said closure member, and means for turning said rod.
2. In a combined pepper and salt shaker, the combination of a circular main body portion having a substantially centrally located tubular member arranged vertically therethrongh and divided vertically mto two compartments, a common discharge chamber above said compartments, an annular wall between said compartments and said dischar e chamber inwhich the upper end of; said tubular member terminates, said annular wall; being upwardly inclined towards its outer edge, a port from each of said compartments into said discharge chamber, a closure member adapted to move over said ports, a rod in said tubular member connected at its upper end to said closure member, and means for turning said rod.
