UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. ATWATER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CESSPOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,957, dated December 22, 1874; application led August 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. ATWATER, of' Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and'useful Improvementin Cess-Pools, ofwhich the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the top; Fig. 2, a plan of the top, representing the holes open; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation With the removable strainer inserted; and Fig. 4, a plan of the top with one-half of the holes open and the other half closed.
Like letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts in the different figures of the drawings.
the cess-pool from becoming` clogged, and for rendering it easily cleansed; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more perfect and effective device of this character is produced than is now in common use.
InA Figure l, a is the top or cover of the cesspool, Which is provided on its under side with the two sliding plates b c. These plates are perforated to correspond with the holes in the top, and are operated by means ofthe handles or knobs d e, which have shanks attachednto the plates, and are arranged to Work in the slots g g. The cover a is provided with a eentral opening to receive the elongated strainer fi, the opening being closed by the cap h when the stra-incr is removed. The strainer is provided with a large number of lateral perforations, andI has a centrally-arranged rod, a',
which is screwed firmly into the bottom of the f 'with such matters, thus serving to prevent the apertures or perforations from becoming c1ogged. The lateral openings in the strainer t' should, in the aggregate, be of greater capacity than the main central opening covered by the cap h, for obvious reasons.
In nearly all cess-pools, as ordinarily oonstructed, the apertures through the strainer become easily clogged, and there is no adequate means for cleansing them or opening the apertures when choked `or filled up. My invention is designed to obviate this objection; and to that end I make use of the strainer t for greatly increasing the discharging capacity ofthe cess-pool, and at the same time preventing it from clogging.
It will be obvious that the strainer may be used in a cess-pool which is not provided with the slides or plates b c Without departing from the spirit of my invention; also, that both of the sliding plates may be closed and all of the liquid Which is discharged into the cess-pool be caused to pass through the strainer, or both the plates may be opened, as occasion requires.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In acess-pool, the elongated strainer ,provided with the central rod m, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
