Be it known that I, JOHN C. MoMnnnnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ewen,y in the county of Ontonagon and State f of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tashboiler Protectors, of which the following is a speciiication.

'This invention relates to a. protector adapted for use upon a wash boiler' so that when the wash boiler is filled with water and clothes and islifted from one place to another there will be no danger of thebottomof the wash boiler being dented when set down.` It often happens that when a wash boiler which is iilled with water and clothes is set down upon a cement iioor' or upon kthe top of a stove. it will receive a blow which will so dent it that a hole will be formed in the boiler or the seam which connects the bottom of the boiler with the walls will spring loose and the boiler there-V by caused to leak and be rendered useless.

One object of the invention is to provide a guard which can be' readily applied to a wash boiler of a conventional construction and securely held in place by suspending means engaged with the handles of the boiler. Y

Another object of the invention is to so connect the suspending means with the band which tits upon the lower portion of the boiler that the suspending means will not interfere with ready application of the. bandto the boiler. -k

Another object of' the invention is to so construct the suspending means thatrthey may be easily engaged with the handles of the boiler and adjusted,longitudinally so thatfthe protector maybe applied to boilers of varying depths and rmly held in place. While itis stated that the protector is for use in connection with wash boilers, it will be understood that it could also be used in connection with the other receptacles which are intended to receive heavy loads `and. moved from one place tol another while loaded.

The wash boiler which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and closed at its upper end by a cover 2 is of a conventional con- 60 struction. lV ash boilersare, as a General rule, of greater length than width and are provided with rounded end portions. Thereiore, the protector, as illustrated in connection with a wash boiler, has its boiler-en- 05 gaglng band 3 formed as shown iin F ig. 2 So that it will conform to the contour of the wash boilerto which it is to be applied. lhe band 3 is formed of angle metal and includes a lower horizontal flange 1l which 70 nts beneath the boiler and engages the bottom thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, and a vertically extending side flange 5 which extends upnf'ardly from the outer side edge oi' the lower flange l and engages the outer iace ot 75 the walls of the boiler. The band 3 will, of course, be formed the proper length and width to snugly fit upon a boiler-of a sizev with which itis to be used. A bar or strip 3 extends longitudinally oi the protector 30 to brace the protector and assist in lshielding the bottom oi2 the boiler.

In order to retain the band in place upon the boiler, there has been provided suspending means of a special construction so that the band may be suspended from the han# dles of the wash boiler. A handle is provided at each end of the boiler and each handle is formed with a hand grip G secured at its ends to thearms or brackets 7 which 90 extend from the hand grip to the wall of the boiler and are provided at their inner ends with base portions 8 soldered or other wise secured to the boiler. The suspending means are of a duplicate construction and each includes a yoke 9 formed from a strand of rod meta-l bent intermediate its length to provide arms l0 which extend downwardly in diverging relation and have their lower ends passed through openings 1l formed in 100 the vertical iiange of the band 3. Heads l2 are formed at the ends of the arms 10, as shown in Fig. 3, to hold the arms in the openings 1l, the heads being countersunk so that they will `not extend from the inner fave ot the flange 5 and prevent the band when rotated draw the rod 123 upwardly so that the band 3 will be drawn into tightengagement with the boiler and lirinly held iii place. The ai'ins 1S or the grapple' extend upwardly troni the yoke and have their' upper tree end portions t'ornied into hooks 1f) alapted to engage the upper edges the arms T oi the handle. ln the presentl illustration. the grapples have been shown so proportioned that the arms 1S may be passed through the handles between the arms T and then moved downwardly so that the hooks 19 will engage-the upper edges o:t` the bracket arms. lt should be further noted that the grapples will preferably be termed ot metal having resiliency sul'licient to permit the arms 18l to have movement towards and away 'lrom each other. rlhe arms ot' the grapples can, therefore, be moved towards each other as the grapples are 'forced downwardly through the handles of the boiler and their hooked ends readily engage the arms ol the handles. rhere has, therefore, ieen provided a boiler guard which is ot a simple construction and which niay be easily applied and lii'inly held in place.

lilaving thus described the invention, I claim:

7. A receptacle guard comprising a band adapted to fit about the bottom of a receptacle and having a horizontal iange to tit beneath the. receptacle and a vertical flange to extend along the outer faces or' the Walls of the-receptacle, yokes carried by the vertical flange and including arms extending upwardly in converging relation and connected at their upper ends, grapples each including a crosshead provided With an opening and arms extending upwardly from the crossliead and formed with hooks at their upper ends for engagement With handles of the receptacle, and rods having their lower ends formed into eyes engaged With said yoles at the connected upper ends of their arms, said rods having threaded upper end portions extending through the openings in the bridges of said grapples, and nuts threaded upon said rods and engaging the bridges ot' said grapples Whereby said rods may be moved longitudinally and said band drawn into iirm engagement with the receptacle.4
