Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SCHADE, oE NEW Yonk, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CSTER'STANDS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 157,935, dated December 22, 1874; application led June 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SCHADE, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caster-Stands; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, whichforms part of this specification.
This invention relates to the cheaper kind of caster-stands, which, in ord er th at they may be packed closely together and transported as chea-ply as possible, are made of a number of separable parts; and it particularly relates to the connection of the bases to the pillars of such caster-stands, the object being to so construct thesc parts that they may be readily and securely united, and the bases, when detached or separated from the pillars, may be packed by nesting them snugly and closely together, one within another. To this end the invention consists in the combination of a pillar or post having at its lower end an externally screw-threaded hub or boss, with a base made preferably of sheet metal, and having a central opening through it provided with a female screw-socket, the said parts being so constructed and adapted to each other that the male 4screw may pass through the said basepiece into the unoccupied space below it, thereby dispensing with any and all projections on the top of the base, and hence enabling such base-pieces to be nested snugly and closely together, one within another, so as to occupy but little space, and be less liable to injury in transportation.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved caster-stand and Fig. 2 is a side view, on a larger scale, of the pillar and base of such stand, the upper part of the base being broken away to show the screw-threads by which the two parts are screwed together. v
A designates the base-piece or pedestal of the stand, such base-piece being in the present instance made of thin metal spun into the desired shape, preferably conical in form, with ornamental moldings encircling it. Through this base-piece there is made a central opening, which is provided with a screw-threaded socket, B. In the presentinstance the screwthread is formed in a ring or piece of metal, which may be secured in place within said opening in the base-piece by solder or otherwise; but it is obvious that a female screwthread may be spun or otherwise formed directly in the base-piece. O is the pillar or upright of the stand. It is shown as made of the usual tapering form, with a shoulder at the upper end to support the revolving rack or bottle-holder H, and on its lower end it has an external or male screw-threaded boss or projection, b, which is capable of fitting in the screw-thread provided in the base-piece. When the two parts are thus made they are detachable and attachable at pleasure, and, when detached, can each be packed, with corresponding parts of other casters similarly made, in a very small space, and hence occupy little room, and be less liable to injury during transportation. D is the stem or handle of the stand. In the present instance it is fastened to the end of the pillar C, in a well-known manner, by a screw provided on the top of such pillar, a space being left between the bottom of the said handle and the shoulder a on the pillar for the reception of the rim of the rack or holder H, which lits the screw, and is free to be revolved or turned around it to enable the casters to be conveniently reached. This rack may be of any suitable kind. It is shown as consisting of a circular band containing an annular arrangement of rings or sockets for the receptionof'the casters or bottles.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a caster-stand, the combination, with a pillar orpost,0, provided with a screw-threaded boss or hub, b, of a base-piece, A, provided 4with a female screw-socket formed or affixed in a central opening made through such basepiece, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
