ASH-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 14, 1914.
Application filed June 17, 1912. Serial No. 704,062.
Z '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Orro L. HmNTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo in the county of Erie and State of New Yor have invented new and useful Improvements in AshReceptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an ash receptacle of that type in which a plurality of trays of different sizes are nested one within another so that they can be stowed away compactly but can be separated and passed around to dilferent persons desiring to use the same.
It is the object of this invention to provide an ash receptacle of this character in which the upper edges of the several trays when nested will have the appearance of but a single tray, thus rendering the same more attractive when only one tray is required for use.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ash receptacle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same with the innermost tray omitted. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the nested trays.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In its general organization my improved ash receptacle comprises a plurality of trays 1, 2, 3 each of which has a bottom and an upright side wall or flange and the several trays being of different sizes or diameters so that they can be nested one within another for compactness when desired.
The outermost tray is preferably constructed somewhat ornamental and for this purpose its side wall 4 may be tapered upwardly and its bottom 5 dished upwardly at the center. The bottom of each intermediate tray 2 is preferably horizontal and its wall vertical so that the same is comparatively plain. The innermost tray 8 also has a horizontal bottom but its wall is provided at its upper edge with a laterally projecting annular rim 6 which extends over the upper edges of the outermost and intermediate trays and thereby produces a neat and finished appearance when the same are nested and only the innermost tray is in use. In this nested condition of the several trays the bottoms of the same engage one another and the upper edges of the side walls of the outermost and intermediate trays are in line but the upper edge of the innermost tray is arranged above the upper edges of the outer and intermediate trays and the rim of the innermost tray clears the walls of the intermediate trays but engages the wall of the outermost tray. By this means ashes and dust are excluded from the space between the outermost innermost, and intermediate trays when the same are nested and the same present the appearance of being but a single tray.
I claim as my invention:
1. An ash receptacle comprising an outer tray, and an inner separable tray adapted to be arranged within the outer tray'and having its bottom close to the bottom of the latter and provided at the upper edge of its flange or side wall with a laterally projecting annular rim which extends over the upper edge of the flange or side wall of the outer tray..
2. An ash receptacle comprising a plurality of separable trays of different diameters adapted to be nested one within another the innermost tray having its bottom arranged close to the next adjacent tray being provided with a laterally projecting annular rim which extends over the upper edges of the outermost and intermediate trays.
Witness my hand this 31st day of May,
OTTO L. HEINTZ. IVitnesses THEO, L. POPP, ANNA HEIGIS.
