GARMENT HANGER.

Continuation of application Serial No. 747,761, filed November 24, 1924. This application filed September 24, 1925'. Serial No. 58,348.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE C. Criss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The present invention relates to garment hangers, and aims to provide a'hanger for trousers, skirts, and other garments, comprising a. novel construction and assemblage of the compo-nent elements, this application being a continuation of application Serial No. 747,761, filed Nov. 4, 1924.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a garment hanger comprising clamping bars or jaws, hingedly connected members carrying said bars or jaws, and novel means for holding said members and bars or jaws together'to clamp the garment and operable in a convenient manner to release the bars or jaws so that they can be separated for the insertion or removal of the garment.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side. elevation of the improved garment hanger.

The garment isV held between a pair of horizontal clamping bars or jaws 10 of wood or other'suitable material, which are formed with concaved recesses 11 in their adjacent or confronting sides between the ends of the bars, in order to accommodate. seams or folds of the garment, so that the garment can be clamped between the opposite end portions of the bars when the portion of the garmentl .at the center of the bars is of greater thickness due to seams, folds or doubled portions, which are accommodated by the recesses l1. If desired, one bar can have the recess and the other bar can be plain (with therecess omitted) to cheapen the cost of manufacture.

12 and 13 formed from stout wire. Said wire members have the

14 and 15, respectively, and the. lower diverging terminals 16 formed with eyes 17 engaging rivets 18 or other securing elements that engage through the bars 10 near the ends of said bars, to clamp the eyes 17 lzggainst the outer or opposite sides ofI said ars.

loops

The member 19 has a bent back portion 22 below the portion 21 disposed between the yoke or cross portions of the loops, and said member 19 has another bent back portion 23 below the portion 22 extending under the band 2() and formed with an eye 24 embracing one limb of the loop 14, thereby rigidly connecting therhook or suspending member 19 and themember 12, leaving the member 13 free to be swung relatively to the

members

12 and 19. By engaging the hook or member 19 over a supporting rail, bracket, or other supporting member, the garment hanger may be suspended as usual.

In order to hold the bars or jaws 10 together so as to clamp the garment between them, a U-shaped latch 25 is provided, being formed from stout wire, and straddling the loop 15. The terminals of the latch 25 are bent into hooks or eyes 26 engaging loosely through coils or eyes 27 with which the limbs of the loop 14 are provided, permittingthe latch 25 to be swung upwardly and downwardly about a. transverse axis extending throughthe eyes 27. The limbs of the loop 15 are provided with offsets 28 extending at anangle so as to project between and acrossthe limbs of the loop 14 when the bars 1() are brought together, and when members having the latch 25 is swung upwardly, it enters the open slots ot the oliisets 2S, thereby permitting the

12 and 13 and the bars 10 to be swung apart for inserting the garment between or removing it from the bars 10. However, the latch 25 entering the oitscts 2S will limit the separation ot' the

12 and 13. The limbs of the loop 15 are curved, as at 2S), immediately below the oisets 28 to tor-m cams for the engagement of the latch in order that when said latch is swung downwardly from the otisets 2S it will ride over the cam portions 29 so as to torce the

members

12 and 13 toward one another in order to Clamp the garment between the bars 10. Thus, aiter the garment has been placed between the bars 10, with the bars 10 separated and the latch 25 in the offsets 2S, the garment is quickly and conveniently clamped between the bars l0 by simply swinging the latch downwardlyv over the cam portions 29, from the dotted line position to the full line position as seen in Fig. 2. ln order to release the garment trom the hanger it is only necessary to swing the latch 25 upwardly into the offsets 28, which permit the bars 10 to be separated.

As seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the coils or eyes 27 form helical or spiral cams against which the limbs of the latch 25 contact, so that when the latch 25 is swung upwardly into the offsets 2S, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the cam action between the limbs ot the latch 25 and eyes 27 will have a tendency to spread the limbs ot' the latch 25 apart or to torce the limbs ot the loop 1st toward one another, which yielding action is permitted due to the tact that the parts are ot resilient material. This yielding action has a tendency to swing the latch 25 downwardly by cam action between the eyes 2T and limbs ot` the latch 25, so that when the

12 and 13 are pressed together below the latch 25, the latch 25 will swing downwardly into engagement with the cam portions 29. This action will also avoid accidental disengagement ot' the latch 25 from the portions 29, and the latch is swung into engagement with the portions 29 when the device is disposed in any po'sition, even when inverted. This renders the device convenient to use inasmuch as when the

12 and 13 are pressed together to clamp the garment between the bars or aws 10, the latch 25 will automatically swing out oit the oilsets 2S and into engagement with the cam port-ions 29.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isz- 1. A. garment hanger comprising two wire hingedly connected loops with depending limbs, jaws Carried by the lower ends ot said limbs ot the two members, the limbs of one loop having oil'sets between the hinge and jaws extending toward the other loop and adapted to extend across the limbs ot' said other loop when the jaws are moved together, and a latch hingedly connected to the secondnamed loop and straddling the iirstnamed loop and adapted to be swung into said ollsets to permit said members to be swung apart, the limbs of the firstnamed loop having cam portions extending 'from said oii'sets tor the engagement ot' said latch when swung out ot said oll'sets in order to clamp the jaws together.

2. A garment hanger comprising a pair of hingedly connected members, one o'll which is composed ot' wire and provided with two coils forming eyes having cam surfaces, jaws carried by said members, and a U-shapcd latch having its terminals hingedly engaged in said eyes, the other member having a cam portion, said latch straddling the lastnamed member to engage said cam portion and clamp the jaws together, and said cam surfaces engaging the limbs ot said latch to obtain yielding action of said latch and tirstnamcd member when the latch is swung out ot engagement from said cam portion and to swing the latch into engagement with said cam portion when said members are pressed together.

A garment hanger coniprising two wire members having hingedly connected loops with depending limbs, jaws carried by the lower ends of said limbs of the two members, the limbs ot one loop having coils 'forming eyes having cam surfaces, the limbs ot the other loop having oiliscts between the hinge and jaws extending toward the lirstnamed loop, and a latch having its terminals hingedly engaging in said eyes, said latch straddling the secondnamed loop and being adapted to be swung into said oillsets to permit said members to be swung apart, the limbs of the sccondnamed loop having cam portions extending from said otlsets for the engagement ot said latch when swung out oi said offsets in order to clamp the ja together, and said cam surfaces engaging the limbs ot said latch and so arranged as to obtain a yielding action of said latch and lirstnamed loop when the latch is swung into said offsets and to swing the latch into engagement with said cam portions when .said members are pressed together.
