Application filed March 12, 1925. Serial No. 15,025.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN B. TnIXinnA, a citizen of Portugal, and residing near San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel form of tile so formed and constructed as to be readily mounted upon the framework of a roof and comblned with additional tiles of identical form and construction to make a substantial, water tight, durable and fire-proof roof covering.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a roof embodying my invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, I show at 1 the body portion of a tile of suitable thickness and flat throughout the greater portion of its width and length, but curved downwardly at one end to form a lip 52 at substantially right angles to part 1. A slot 3 is formed in the edge of said lip for the purpose hereinafter described. The end of the tile opposite to the curved end 2 is provided with an upstanding flange 4 offset a distanoe'at one end as indicated at 5 to receive one end of flange 4 on the adjoining tile as shown in dotted lines at 6 when the tiles are assembled on a roof frame.
Along one of the side edges of the tile body 1 is an upstanding flange 7 of the same height as flange 4. This flange 7 carries a laterally extending overhanging part 8 provided with depending and spaced ribs 9 and 10 to form grooves 11 and 12 as shown. These parts 8,910-1112 extend the full length of plate 1 and follow its curvature from offset 5 to the end of lip 2.
Along the opposite side of body 1 is an upstanding flange 13 and parallel therewith and spaced a distance therefrom is an upstanding rib 14 forming a groove 15 thereis an enlarged plan view of a between, the parts 1314 extending from end flange 4 to the end of lip 2.
The height of flange 13 and rib 14 is equal to the height of end flange 4 less the thickness of the overhanging part 8.
A shallow recess 16 is formed across the upper surface of part 8 where it abuts oil'- set part 5, and two short feet 17 are formed on the under surface of body 1 beneath flanged end 4. A lug is also formed on the under side of body 1 as at 18 and provided with a hole 19.
In assembling the tiles on a roof frame they are placed in rows with the parts 8 9 101112 of one tile overlapping and engaging the parts 13-14I5 of the ad joining tile, and each tile is secured to the roof frame 20 by means of a wire engaging the same and hole 19 in the tile.
The next higher row of tiles are now secured in staggered relation to the lower row, the slot 3 in the lip of each upper tile engaging the recessed portion 16 in part 8 of the lower tile, and the lips 2 of the upper tiles lying against the front surfaces of the flanges 4 of the lower tiles.
At the peak of the roof a ridge is provided as shown consisting of tile elements 21 provided with overlapping engaging ends 22,
It may be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a construction which is water-proof and fire-proof, substantial, strong, durable, economical to manufacture, and one in which the several parts are quickly assembled. In this construction a solid sheathing for the roof frame is not required as it is only necessary to provide suitable strips as 23 for carrying the feet 17 and any suitable means may be used for securing the tiles to the roof frame.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction and method of application may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A roofing tile comprising a plate having an upstanding flange extending its full width at one end and a downwardly curving lip at the other end, said lip having a notch formed therein and said flange having one end offset a distance to receive one end of the upstanding flange on an adjoinin; file, and said plate having a pair of upstanding spaced and parallel ribs of uniform height formed along one side edge to form a groove the other side edge carrying an upstanding flange and a laterally extending overhanging part carried by said flange,
said overhanging part having a palr of Spaced parallel ribs ol. uniform heightdepending therefrom to form, in conjunction with said last mentioned flange, a pair of parallel groo'ves and a groove formed transversely in its upper surface adjacent to said first mentioned upstanding flange.
