WINDOW CORNICE.

Application filed October 20, 1925. Serial No. 63,736.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR LEON Nos- BAUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore, in the 5 county of Baltimore and State of Maryland,

have invented certain new and useful Im- I provements in Window Cornices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in 2 window cornices and has for an object cornice especially adapted for arrangement adjacent a window whereby to cover or conceal the poles, rods and other fittings employed to hang or support the window curtains and draperies, and to lend materially to the ornamental appearance of the same.

It is likewise an equally important object of the invention to provide a window cornice utilizing cornice blocks of such construction as will permit the cutting of the moulding pieces or strips to any desired lengths,

whereupon the meeting ends 'thereof may be effectually and artistically jointed or interconnected, thus rendering the device particularly advantageous for fitting to windows or frames of different sizes. A

Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and pointed out hereinafter.

Having more particular reference to the drawings in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the improved window cornice may be stated comprises front and side moulding pieces or running strips designated herein for the purpose of convenience by the

numerals

1 and 2, the outer faces of said moulding pieces being provided with suitable or desirable forms of ornamentation, such as carving, frieze, etc, and corner blocks 3 and 4, these latter being adapted to effect connection between the angularly meeting ends of the side and front moulding

pieces

1 and 2 in the manner generally indicated in Figure 1.

The corner blocks 8 and 4 are preferably constructed of wood or material similar to the

moulding pieces

1 and 2 and as will be noted, each of these corner blocks are substantially triangular in cross section, the outer surfaces thereof being provided with such ornamentations as is indicated in Fig.- ure 1, while the opposite end portions of the blocks form plane shoulders against which the adjacent or meeting ends of the

moulding strips

1 and 2 areadapted to abut, in the manner indicated in Figure 8. To permit the securing of the meeting angular ends of the

strips

1 and 2 in abutting and flush contact with the shoulders of the corner blocks 3 and 4c, designated at this time by the numeral 5, a substantially dove-tailed like extension 6 is arranged upon the inner side of said blocks 3 and 4 and the opposite portions of this extension extend short distances beyond the shoulders 5 as indicated by the numeral 7, hence, providing angularly opposed and similarly formedseats for the angularly 'nieeting ends of the} mould- =ing strips 1-;ami- 2, the inner sideportions Q'of-the opposite 'ends of sald strips 1'and 2 resting against the ad acent plane-surfaces of the extensions '2' of said dove-tailed pieces 6. Openings are formed'iinthe extended-- portions 7 of the dovetail l pieces (i and open onto the plane sides of the same adjacent the shoulders 5, thus permitting the passage of screws 8 or other suitable fastening devices therethrough into engagement with adjacent portions of the meeting ends of

1 and 2, for securing the same in assembled relation as clearly indicated in Figure 3.

It is of course to be understood that various means or ways may be devised for securing the improved cornice in Fixed and proper position with respect to a window frame or window, such as conditions or preference ma v dictate.

In Figure I have shown a slightly modilied form of corner block for the improved window cornice, the block herein being designated hr the numeral l and being formed of wood or other suitable material. Said block is substantially triangular in cross section, this angular formation being even more accentuated than itis in the aforesaid embodiment. 1 and 2 through the medium of the corner blocks 1 and hence, it will be understood that with the arrangement of one of these corner blocl-is st adjacent each of the angularl meeting ends of the

1 and 2, an effectual means will be provided for maintaining the elements of the window cornice in assembled relation.

passjng througli sa th' I niier -strips of the window cornice upon a window frame is such as to effect its positioning adjacent the upper portion of the window curtain or draperies 16, which as will be understood are received and supported through the medium of suitable accessories upon poles or similar devices attached or secured to adjacent parts of the upper portions of said window frame. Thus, it follows that the window cornice will serve to conceal the supports for the draperies or window curtains and likewise, will conceal those fittings or accessories employed to secure or arrange such curtains or draperies upon the support therefor if such be employed. In addition to concealing the. mounting of the curtains or draperies upon the support therefor on the window frame, it will be furthermore appreciated, that the improved cornice will all'ord an attractive and ornamental device, lending materially to the interior decorations of a room equipped there with.

Various forms of material may of course be utilized for the construction of the side and front moulding strips or pieces as may also the corner blocks be formed of various other materials other than wood, herein referred to. Likewise the ornamentation on the outer faces of the moulding strips and corner blocks may be applied by the heretofore practiced moulding processes, by carving, or by various other processes, common in and known to the art at this time.

Manifestly, the constructions shown herein are capable of still other n'iodilications and therefor, it is to be understood that such modifications as are within the scope of the appended claims I consider within the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. A window cornice comprising side and front moulding pieces, and corner blocks having rightangularlv opposed shoulders thereon and adapted to receive the adjacent ends of said side and front moulding pieces. the outer faces of said blocks being ornamented, and fastening means passed through the inner sides of the shoulders from the inner sides of said blocks into engagement with adjacent portions of said side and front moulding pieces.

3. A window cornice comprising side and front moulding pieces, corner blocks substantially triangular in cross section, each of said corner blocks having dove-tailed extensions upon the inner sides thereof, portions of said dove-tailed extensions being extended beyond certain of the sides of said corner blocks and forming thereon angular-1y opposed right angularly formed shoulders adapted to flushly receive the adjacent ends of the side and front moulding pieces, the

outer faces of said corner blocks being ornameted and fastening means passed through the inner sides of said shoulders by way of the inner sides of said dove-tailed like extensions and into engagement with adjacent portions of said moulding pieces for inter-connecting the same.
