RELEASE CLUTCH FOR GRINDING MILLS.
7 Application filed July 1,
to the movable disk from the shaft, the
clutch being so constructed that it will yield when foreign matter passes between thetwo disks, or when the mill is choked.
This yielding prevents breaking :of the parts.
In the accompanying drawings:
' Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a grinding mill illustrating my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view showing portions of the clutch.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of the mill. 2 is a portion of an electric motor, having a shaft 3, which drives the shaft 4 of. the mill. The coupling is made as shown clearly in Fig. 1. Enclosing the coupling is a sleeve 5. Between the head 6 of the sleeve and the end of a feed screw '7 is a coiled spring 8. This spring tends to force the two disks of the mill apart. The hopper 9 ofthe mill is directly above the feed screw 7. Thedischarge opening 10 for the ground material is located under the disks. The grinding disk 11 is secured to the body of the mill and has grinding teeth of any shape desired. The mill is fed by the screw 7 through the throat 12 of the disk. The rotating grinding disk 13 is mounted on an extension 14' of the feed screw 7 Back of the grinding. disk 13 is a disk 15. The two disks are secured to the screw 7 by one, or morescrews 7 4, beyond the screw 7, is a collar 16, which is secured to the shaft by a pin 17 This choked.
I cover plate against a earn a sleeve 32 by means of screws 33, Flg. 1.'
On the shaft 1924. Serial No. 723,568.
collar has a transverse groove 18 therein, as shown clearly in Fig. 4, and forms one member of the clutch. The other member of the clutch consists of a ball 19, which is mounted in a radial channel 20 in a projection 21 that is cast integral with the disk 15. The projection '21 is tubular, as shown.
Mounted in the projection is a sliding plunger 22, back of which is a coiled spring 23, which is held in place by a screw 24.
The end of the plunger is beveled, as shown at the center to receive the ball 19, when it is forced out of the groove 18 in the collar 16. This construction forms a release clutch betweenlthe power driven shaft and the grinding disk so as to prevent the clearly in Fig. 4,"and has a conical seat 25' 1 breaking of the parts when the mill becomes Mounted on 26. In this cover plate is a bearing 27, which is heldin'place by a set screw 28. Beyond the bearing and within the body portion 1 is the an extension 29 of the cover plate 26'is a cam disk 30, which has three cam faces, in 1 the present-instance. These cam faces rest block 31 that is secured to This sleeve is mounted on the extension 29 of the cover plate 26 and is so shaped that it can be grasped by the hand to turn it on the extension to adjust the cam block 31 in respect to the cam disk 30. Located in the camdisk '30 is a ball thrust bearing 34, which receives the thrust of the shaft 4. On the cam disk 30 is a projection 35, which enters a recess in. the bearing 27 which. prevents the turning of the cam disk.
In order to tion in which it is adjusted, a plunger 36 is provided, which is mounted inthe sleeve. Back of the plunger is a spring 37. This plunger is adapted to enter any one of the depressions 38 in the? end of the cover plate 26, thereby retaining the sleeve in the position in which it is adjusted. In order to limit the movement of the sleeve, a pin 39,
' carried by the sleeve, extends into a slot 40 hold the sleeve 32 in the posiin the end. of the extension 29 of the cover plate 26; The sleeve may have marks indieatingv whether it is adjusted to grind coarse, medium or fine.
clear the material from the interior of the grinding chamber. Opposite the projection 21 is a projection 49., which acts as a bearing with the projection 21, to holdthe disk in alignment with the cover plate 26.
By the construction hereinbefore described, it will be seen that if the material should clog the grinding mill, or, it any foreign matter passes between the plates, the ball of the release clutch is forced out ot the groove '18 and into the radial channel in the projection 21,- being held in the channel by the plunger 22, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.v
It will be noticed that the walls of the groove 18 are beveled. The bevel may be of any degree desired to allow the ball to be held in position until vibrced out should the parts become clogged. Under ordinary grinding, the rotating grinding disk 13 is driven from the shaft 4. through-the release clutch.
I claim: V
1. The combination in a release clutch,
of a shaft; a collar on the shaft, said collar having a groove therein; a member on the shaft and having a tubular pro ection; a
radial channel in the projection; a sliding plunger in the tubular projection; a spring back of the plunger; and a ball in the radial channel arranged to enter the groove in the collar, the plunger yieldingly holding the ball in engagement with the collar.
2. The combination in a release clutch, of i tending to hold the ball in the groove of the collar, said plunger having a conical seat in its end for the ball when moved outo'f engagement with the sleeve; and a spring back of the plunger.
