II'LTON' F. WILLIAMS, OF 8'1. LOUIS, MISSQUR I, ASSIGNOB '10 WILLTLMS PATENT cnusmm To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, Mnzroir F. WILLIAMS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Breaker-Plates for Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in breaker. plates for grinders, the object of which .is to provide means to effect-a preliminary breaking up 'of the feed, prior to finer reduction on thelower portion of the breaker plate. A further object is to facilitate changing the operation of a mill such as shown in my Patent. 758,288 dated A ril 26. 1904, by substituting the breaker lpl ject of the present application for the plain breaker plate that is' shown said patent. The peculiarities of construction will be hereinafter described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing-on which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts':' I v Figure 1 represents 'a-vertical cross section of a grinder embodying my improvement; and f Fig. 2, a separate perspective view of my one-piece breaker late.
The letter A designates any suitable-housing or casing of a grinder, having a hopper B, the bottom 0 of which inclines downward substantially tangential to the path of hammers D, pivoted to disks E, keyedto a shaft F, mounted in suitable bearings (not shown) in said housing; An. arcuate cage G, of bars or other suitable construction, cooperates with said'hammers in grinding the material till it is fine enough to assthrough the cage, and extends prefer-a 1y from the central horizontal lane around toward ,the' where it meets abreaker, plate Hthat is 'flush with and forms the" continuation of said bottom, and is substaii-s both the ho er bottomgan'd said cage.
plane n of which is farther away from the path ate that is the sub The upper breaking face is preferably PULVEBIZEB 00., OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF BREAKER-PLATE FOB GBINDERS.

This 'breaker plate is secured in its opera- ,tive position by, for example, a wedge key '4 I through asIot-in a back'lug J, and shims K, or otherm'eans to allow ad uStment of the faces, L and M, preferably of divergin incl'med lanes, connected by an interme iate reversely inclined or otherwise formed soas to. constitute a step, the edge of the hammers than is the lower faceof the breaker plate'. Thus'the higher face L is substantially a continuation ofthe hopper bottom but'at lesser inclination to the horizontal, while the lower face M is (steeper and substantially tangent t0 the arcuatecage.

sliding down the lower [face into. closer proximity to the path of the hammers, till it is delivered upon the 'arcuate cage.
smoothto facilitate entrance of the feed, but the lower breaker face may be either smooth,
'or corrugated as indicated at m Fig. 2, or a otherwise, depending on whichs'tyle is best adapted to hold back and effect the second reducfion of the material being ground.
