. To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLiAMv SGI-IWEM- lLinv, a citizen of the United States, residing kat Parkersburg, in the county of `Wood and State of IV est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves, and more particularly to combined pressure and vacuum relief valves.
The valve forming the subject matter of the present invention is adapted to be employed in place of the oil seal gage on the man hole dome cover of an oil tank or may be used on any other typev of 'container wherein either a pressure or a vacuum is apt to exist and must be relievedu In the present type of pressurewand vacu um relief valves, the vacuum valve is mount- Y ed beneath the pressure valve. In the presy ent invention, I provide a valve of thisvcharacter in which the vacuum valve is mounted Y above the pressure valve;
@ne of the advantages obtained by4 the vvpresent construction Yisl the increase inv area n l of the passages. In the .former eonstructions,'the area` of the pressurevalve vis reduced b-y the amount vof space necessary vto, use for the vacuum valve, Whereas inthe valve forming the subject vmatter. 'of the present invention, the area of the pressure valve is practically equal to the area lof the opening over which the valve is placed.
A furthery advantage of this construction is that the weight of the vacuum valve parts y is added to the weight that must be elevated to'unseat the pressure valve. In prior constructions, th e pressure valve is maintained onits seat byiweights placed onv top of it and the weight so employed may be reduced in thc present construction an amount equal to the weight of the vacuum valve parts.
Invr the accompanyingV drawings, I have j shownone embodiment of the invention. Inl
this showing Figure l isa vertical sectional View show- Y ing both of the valves in closed position,
Figure 2 is a similar view showingthe vacuum valve in open position,r v
Figurefz, Ls a similar vlW showing* the pressure valve in open position,
Fi "ure is horizontal sectional vi'vv on line M4 of Figure l, and,
Figure 5 is' a ldetail sectional View substantially'on line 15-5 of yFigure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 ,designates va tank or container having an opening 2 formed therein; A cylindrical member 3 is secured to the tank in any suitable manner. As shown, this meinber isy provided with a flange 4 at the bottom` and suitable fastening elements 5 are passed through this flange and the wall of the tanki An annular plate 6 is bolted Ato a flange 7 l lower yend ofthe rod is threaded, and is adapted to receive a nut`13 by'means of which' a washer I4 is retainedA in'position. This washer is adapted to engage the bottom of the hub when the rodis moved upwardly vto limit itsinovement. V Y The pressure valve lis mounted onlthe guide rod vI2 'and consists vof an annular plate l5 `having a central opening 16. This plate vis adapted'to rest upon'the-annular plate 6 I when vclosed position. As shown, the valve is provided' ywith a central hub 17 a connected to the plate by radial arms 18. The liiib 17 surrounds a vreduced'portion 19 of the guide rod and the bottom of thehub engagesa yshoulder 20. The guide rod is provided with a threaded portion 21, adapted to receive anut 22 by means of which the pressure valve member is secured fast to the guide rod. As shown, theplate is providedr A.
with spacedY openings .1i-'3,' communicating of thevalve member.`
Y with passages 24 extending to the periphery TheV vacuum valve consists-of an annular y' plate 25 adapted to .rest'on lthe pressure valve and .havinO` acentral o 3en1n026 substantially the saine size' as the'central opening in the pressure valve.'V This plate carries a hub .'27 vconnected thereto by 'means of radial arms 28l andthe hub is provided with aj central openingA to slidably receive a reduced upperportioiiw29 of the guide cover .29 arranged over the valves 'and afiapiea to mere with. the pressure van@
