Specification of Lettei-s Eatent. Patented May 2%, 11918.
Application filed October 19, 1917. Serial No. 197,l28.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MACPHER- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in oil tanks, andhas for its object to provide a tank of the character specified, wherein the tank has a floating inside cover adapted to rise and tall with the oil as it varies in level, to prevent the access of air to the surface of the oil.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved tank;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig 1, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to the line.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the tank 1 having a conical cover 2 provided with a depending flange 3 engaging about the top of the tank, and the bottom of the tank has an inlet nipple 4, to which is connected a sup: ply pipe 5, and an outlet 6 to which is connected a valved discharge pipe 7.
A standard 8 is arranged at the center of the tank, the said standard having a foot 9 which rests upon the bottom of the tank at the center thereof, and the standard is of such length that it will extend from the bottom to the apex of the conical. cover when the said cover is in place.
A floating cover is provided, consisting of upper and lower disks 10 and 11, each of which is flanged inwardly as shown, and
these flanges are encircled by a ring 12 which is of a width to extend from the top of the upper disk to below the bottom of the lower disk. The disks are spaced and rein forced by other rings 13 and 14, and the ring 13 is near the peripheries of the disk, while the ring 14: is intermediate the peripheries and the center.
A tube 15 is provided at the center of the cover and forms a part thereof, the said.
tube extending through the upper disk and registering with an opening in the lower disk. This tube has a marginal flange 16 at its bottom which abuts the upper face of the lower disk and is secured thereto and the Standard 8 passes through the tube, the said tube being slidable upon the standard.
With oil in the tank, the cover will rest upon the top of the oil and the ring 12 is of such diameter that it may move freely from top to bottom of the tank close to the interior of the tank wall. The cover will prevent access of air to the surface of the oil in the tank and will rise and fall with the varying level of the said surface I claim:
In combination with a tank and the cover WILLIAM MACPHERSON.
