Application filed May 27, 1924. Serial 170,716,174.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARoELLUs J. SCAN- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermosa, in the county of Custer and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in in choring Devices, of which the follmvingis a specification.
This invention relates to anchoring devices and more particularly to a ground anchor for anchoring a frame structure in an upright position upon the ground surface, and the invention has as one of its objects to provide an anchoring device which will be substantial and durable and not liable to be pulled out of place when once driven into the ground.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the anchor that a yoke member.
which is employed in combination therewith will be securely held connected with the anchor when engaged therewith, the yoke being designed to be secured to the frame structure or the like to be secured by the anchor.
In'the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which the anchoring devices embodying the present invention are to be employed;
Figure 2 anchor;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the said anchor; i i V Figure 4; is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the manner in which the anchor is connected with a companion mem oer upon the frame structure.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a is a side elevation of the ground a frame structure, which is to be secured bythe anchor and which is indicated in general by the numeral 1, and comprises end stiles 2, a pair of intermediate stiles 3, and a plurality of rails indicated by the numeral i, the rails being secured by nails, screws, or other fasteningdevices, to the said stiles 2 and 3 and the said stiles 3 being positioned in parallelism and relatively close together. The stiles 2 and 3 may be of any desired height and the rails 4 of any 'desired length but in any event the lower ends of the stiles- 2 and 3 are all located in the same horizontal plane, so that the frame structure may he stood in an upright position upon the ground surface with the lower ends of all of the stiles engaging squarely with said surface.
' drawal of the anchor.
The numeral 5 indicates in general a yoke with which the anchor ofthe, structure is to cooperate in supporting the-structure in upright position, and this yoke comprises diverging arms 6 portion 7. The yok'e'may be formed from a length of bar metal and the arms 6 thereof are preferablyfiat and of the initial dimensions of the material.employed, the big-ht 7 being produced byreducing the intermediate portion of the n'iaterial, or, in other words,
that portion between the arms 6, to circular form in cross section. The arms 6 are bolted or otherwise secured, as at 8, to the lower end portions of the stiles 3 so that the bight 7, which is of substantially semi-circular form, will extend between the said stiles, the said bight curving downwardly The anchor heretofore referred to, and which is employed in combination with the yoke, is indicated in general by the numeral 9 andthe said anchor is preferably formed from a single length of bar metal whichat one end is brought'to'an entering point indicated by;the numeral 10. .[LlQOVG the entering point and at different elevations, di-
agonal incisions 11.are.formed in the lateral margins ofthe bar comprlslng thefanchor 9, and the material. beyond these incisions is bent laterally from the plane of. the bar and approximately at right angles to said plane" to provide anchoring spurs indicated by the and connecting bight numeral 12. The spurs are so formed asto project inv opposite directions from the bar as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and when the bar is driven into the ground,
these spurs will become embedded in the ground and will offer resistance to with Near its upper end the bar comprising the anchor 9 has a lug 13 struck out therefrom so as to project at right angles laterally from one face of the said bar and this lug serves a purpose to be presently explained. Above the lug 13 the bar is formed with an opening 1 1, and the numeral 15 indicates a hook having two bills '16 and a connecting shank portion 17 which is freely pivotally received within the openmg 14,, the hook being in this manner moun ed upon the bar so that its spaced bills 16 will straddle the bar and be located at opposite sides thereof. The extremities of the bills of the hook 15 are presented in a general downward direction when the hook is properly positioned for coaction with thebight 7 of the yoke 5, and by reference to Fi ure 4: of the drawingsit will be observed that the anchor 9 is to be driven into the ground until its upper end projects but slightly above the ground surface, the hook being engaged with the said bights 7 at a suitable period in the operation of driving the anchor into the ground, and the driving operation being continued after this period until the bills of the hook have tightly engaged overthe bight 7. At this time the'extreinities of the hook bills will substantially engage or slightly enter the ground surface as clearly shown in Figure l, and it will. be evident that the frame structure will be sccurely anchored at 'itsinterinediate portion. it will be evident that due to the provis':on
of the lug 18, there "is no likelihood of the tically when the brace is properly-assembled 7 with the frame structure;
means for preventing upward withdrawal of the anchor, and likewise preventing its edgewise movement in the ground.
In order that the upper portion of the frame structure may bebraced and the structure held in an upright position, there is provided a brace member which isbe'st shown in Figure 1 of the drawings and is 7 indicated by the numeral 18. The said brace member comprises a bar of'wood indicated by the numeral 19 which has itslower end 7 cut to provide a ground engaging edge @1301 t1on 20 and an edge portion 21 whichis disposed at suchan angle as to extend ver- 7 g The upper end of the bar 19 is secured between the upper vends of the stiles 3 in any suitable manner.
' i A yoke 25 corresponding to the yoke In consequence of 5 heretofore described is secured to the lower end portion of the brace bar 19 with its bight extending rearwardly from the end ofithe said-bar, and one of the anchors shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, isdriven into the ground within the yoke and until the hooks of the anchor engage over the 'bight ofthe said yoke.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new-is: 1
1. A. ground anchor comprising a-bar having an entering lower end, and provided with an opening near its upper end, and an ai'ichoring hook comprising spaced 7 hook members and a connecting portion extending between the inner ends of the same and fitting pivotally in the said opening, said hook members having bills curved'toward the connecting portion of, thehook and lying at "opposite sides of the bar, thevhook, between its connecting portion and the bills of the hook members, being of lesslength than the distance between the opening in the bar" and the upper endofthebar. V i 2. A round anchorcom risin a bar V having an entering lower end, and provided with an opening near its upper end, an
anchoring hook comprising spaced hook members and a connecting port-ion extending between the inner ends of the same and fitting pivot'ally in thesaid opening, said hook members having bills curved toward the connecting portion of the hook and lying at oppositesides of the bar, the hook, be-- tween 1ts connecting portion andthe bills of the hook members, being of less length than the distance between .the opemng n the bar and'the upper end of the bar, and'an attach.-
ing member having terminal attaching, per,- Jtions and an intermediatebight portion, the bight portionbeing engaged in the bills ofthe hook members and. against one vertical edge of said bar.
In testimony whereof I affix myv signa 'ture.
