Description

Patented Mar. 30, 1926.
Y JOHN in. MAnIeAN, OF'HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS., j v Tf DIvInEiJ LAST. c
Application led November 114, 1924. Serial No.V 749,884.
.To all whom t may concern.'
,ffBe' it lknown thatl, JOHN M. MADIGAN, a citizen n of lthe United States, residing at Haverhill, inthe county of Essex, State of f Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Divided Last; and I do hereby declare the' following to be a full, clear, and [exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
rIhe invention relates to divided lasts, and has f or its object to provide a device of this V'character comprising a fore part and a heel part, and a link connection between said parts, which link connection is preferably tubular, and a locking device cooperating with the 1iink for holding the parts in nori'nal inoperative position. The locking device also forms means for holding the parts` in operative position.
A further object is to pivotally mount the link. in the bottom of a flared recess of the fore'V part, and to provide the' fore part of Vthe last with a transversely disposed U- r shaped spring member between the arms of which the link is gripped and held for holding the parts in normal inoperative position or in operative position. Y n y Al further object is to provide the U- vshapedspring member with a shank extending through an aperture in the bottom of 'the last and terminating in a headed niember for holding the U-shaped member in position. l i A A further object is to provide cooperating members carried by theheelaiid fore parts of the last which prevent tacks and nails from entering between .the parts of the last and interfering with'the pivotal operation thereof.
Vith the above and other objects in View the invention resides inthe combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, describedand claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise 'embodiment of thev invention may be made within the scopeof whatris claimed, without departing from the spirit of the' invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the last, showing the same in normal position.
Figure 2 is a view 'similar to Figure l, Vbut showing the parts in operative position.
Figure 3 is a -details'ectional on line of Figure 1.
Referring lt the drawing, the numeral vl desi f ,nates the fore lpart ofthe last, andk '2 ,the heel part.' The `lieel-fpart 2 is provided with an aperture 3A for the reception ofthe reduced portionfa and voperating pin fc5 or a bench dog if desired. Secured in a round recess .6 inthe heel portion 2 by means of al transversely disposed pin 7 is a tubular llink 8, which link ts tightly inthe recess 6, vconsequently transverse play, as Well as vertical play. is obviated. Link 8 entends iangularly out of the heel portion 2, and angularly into the flared recess 9 in the fore'part..

displacement in relation to each other, which is a `common difficulty with devices of thisy lcharacter as at present constructed and which rapidly develop play incident to con- .stant -use.
The tubular member 8 is made hollow to reduce the'weight of the device to a minimum, however it is to be understood that the link maybeinade'solid if desired.-
It will be noted that when the forepart. l is rocked on the ,pivot pin ,10, its' arcuate surface 112y of the heel portion 2, andl the outer wide end ofthe taperedrecess l9 willpbe lclosed at all times, thereby preventing `tafcks or otherl foreign matter from entering the recess 9 and interfering with the operation thereof, which has 1been found to bea common difficulty experienced with lasts atpresent constructed. The end 8n vof the tubular member 8 is round and arcuate in relation to 'the pivotal point l0, and closely lengages the round bottom 13 of the recess 9,' therefore it will be seen that there is a snug `lit andthe .link will further brace the forepart l of the last, thereby reducing thestrain on the pivot pin l() and wear thereon. Then the last'section l is 1n inoperative position as shown in vFigure l, the "wall Y14 engages the side of the 16 which extends through the last section 1 yface 11 will. slidably engage thelarcuate suri and is riveted at 17. It will be seen that when the tubular member 8 is,y forced between the spring arms 18,'said spring arms will grip the opposite side of the tubular link'8, and will hold said Alast section 1 against movement on the pivot pin 10. Arms 18 are suiiiciently long to extend beyond the center of the link 8, therefore it will be seen that a strong positive gripping V-action will take place. ``When the last is in operative lposition as shown in Figure 2, the last section 1 is limitedy in'its movement by the engagement ofthe link v8 with the sides 19 of the recess 9, and will be held in said position as shown in Figure 2 by the spring action of the arms 18 cooperating with opposite sides of the link 8 to one side of the l center of theflink, therefore the U-shaped spring member holds the last section 1 in both of its extreme positions in relation to the heel last section 2. The U-shaped spring member 'is preferably disposed in recesses in the opposite walls of the ared L recess 9, thereby allowing the link 8 to en- Y. of a cylindrical member carried by the heel ygage-the opposite sides ofthe recess 9 for V,forming a more rigid structure, preventing wobbling and misalinement of4 parts. The inner end of thelast section 1 is provided with a substantially angularly shaped portion 21, which is received in the similarly shapedv recess22 Vin the forward side of the last section 2, and which projection 21 braces the' device as a whole, and at the same time additionally prevents the passage of nails or foreign matter into the working parts of the last. Last section 1 is also provided with a projection 23,-which overlies the last section 2, and forms a portion of the instep Y contour of the last. p 1
From the above it will be seen that a last is provided of the linked section type, which A*is simple in construction, rigidly braced,
and provided with means cooperating with the linkfor holdingthe same in normal or operative position. It will also be seen that the link is thoroughly braced when in extreme position in either direction, and the recess in which the link is'disposed is entirely closed at all times, thereby preventing nails or foreign matter from entering the recess, and interfering with the proper func- Y tioning of the movable parts of the last.
The invention having been set forth wha vis claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with4 a yshoe last, said last comprising a heel section, a fore section,
section and extending into atapered recess,
said cylindrical member being pivotally mounted in the recessinner end ofthe tapered recess and engaging the side walls of saidV recess, and a U-shaped springl member carried by one side ofthe tapered recess and 'cooperating with opposite .sides of the cylindrical member for holding the same adjacent opposite sides of the recess.
2. The combination with a shoe last comprising a heelv section and a fore part section, la link'connecting said section andl forming means'whereby said sections may be removed in relation to eachother, of an anchored gripping member'disposed within one of the sections and cooperating'withfop- I posite sides of the link and formingmeans opposite sides of said recess cooperating with the cylindrical member for limiting the movement of the pivotedl section, one of said sections entirely closing the V-shaped recess atl all times, and a U-shaped spring member disposed in the recess and cooperating with the cylindrical member for holding the pivoted section in extreme positions. l
4. The' combination .with acylindrical link forming a connection between movable sections of a shoe last, one end of said link extending into a V-shaped recess and pivotally movable in said recess, of a U-shaped- .spring member anchored in one side of said j recess and cooperating with vopposite 'sides of the cylindrical link for gripping and holding the saine in extreme inoperative and operative position. 1
5. The combination with a shoe last coinprising sections movable in relation to each other,a tubular linkconnnection between said sections, said link having one of itsV ends pivoted in the'bottom of a V.shaped reioo cess in one of tlie sections and movablel therein, of a U-shaped spring member anchored in one side of said recess the armspofsaid U- shaped Yspring member cooperating with opposite sides of the link for vholding the same in oppositek extreme positions.
In testimony whereof I have signedk my name to this specification. A*
