UNITED STATES,
Y JOHN ni vaivnnn, on roansrvinnn, oo vnnorrour,
Arno SWING i- Application filed April 18, 1923. Serial No. 632,830.'
Be it known that I, JOHN Lnvnivnnnfa citizen of the United States, residing at Forestville, inthe county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, jhave invented "certain new and useful. Improvements in Aero Swings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in aero swings of the form having a plurality of gondolas or carriages that are individual ly suported' by means of suspension devices so as'to swing freely inspace, being distributed around a common axis and sup ported asa group from the upper end portion of a shaft that is provided with means for being rotated so that in. usethe gondolas or carriages Wlll. swing outwardly from the axis as they are carried arounchj and the objectof. my invention is to produce an aero swing of relatively diminutive form such .as to be adapted to-be used as an attraction or novelty in a show-window orthe like or as a toy, the details of construction being correspondingly simple and the 'main parts being adapted to be readily assembled in V operative position and taken apart.
' enlarged scale of the junction of the shaft In the accompanyingdrawingz' Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved aero swing. 7 Figure 2 is a plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a fragmentaryview on an of the aero swing proper and the driving shaft of the motor. I r I J Figure 4 shows in detail views of the connecting piece or hanger of wire and adjacent parts. I v H My improved aero swing -comprises 1a swingstructure 10 that has acentral, vertically directed shaft 11 that'extends' down- I wardly into a housin'g structure 12 for a propelling means, such as a spring motor N ported for use. j
PATENT; orr cs I ofthe shaft 11 rests upon andis jointed with the upperflend portion 18 of the clock "shaft 16', whereby;the aero shaft 11 is sups n to The clock shaft 16 is made of solid mate rial and the aero swin'gshaft 11 is made of tubing, the latter being of a size so as to be: adaptedto slip over the projecting end portion 18 of the clock shaft 16., A pin be used to complete thecon nectionin some cases. 1 v I j M 1 Iheopening 14in the roof 13 serves as'a guide bearing for the lower end portion 15 of the shaft 11.
The upper end portion orbody portion of the aero shaft 11 is guided by means of a standard 19 that has an opening in the upper end part 2O through-which said shaft 11 extends: v
- The standard 19 is madeof sheetmetal in V strip: form,; is generally ofU-shape'and"posi-' T tion'ed inverted,-the upper end part 20 thereof being a yoke part that servesetojinterconnect the twoside' arms 21. l
The yoke 20 may be relatively short, as
shown, and the side arms generally dive'rgent so that the lower end portions22 are spread {apart suitably tobe mounted on the side walls 23 on opposite sides of the motor housing 12.
- The shaft 11 is capped at the upper end by a ball 24, which latterhas an opening that is adapted to'receive the tip end 120143101125 of said shaft 11, said ball beinglrepl-aceable by an ornamental-figure of any other suitable form.
l\I-ounted -o1rthe shaft' ll and positioned just below the ball 2& is a top plate 26'that serves as a tension plate and receives the upper ends of lllldlndlVldual suspension devices, of whichthere are four in the present instance tocorrepond to the number of gon-odolas or carriages 27 Said suspension dev ces are made of chain lengths and comprise in each casea'n upper 1 member 28 that is relatively short and com- At the junction of the upper and lower strands of the chainthere may be, as shown,
a connecting piece or hanger 30 of wire. Said'hanger may be of any proper form for connecting the opposed chain ends andcomprises, furthermore an inwardly directed radlal arm 32 that serves as the. pos1t1on1ng means in cooperation with the opposed end posed' of a singl strand,'and a lower por-V 'tion that is composed of two strands 29; 1 p
portion of a radially directed strut 31. Said strut is made of tubing and the arm 32 is inserted in the bore thereof- The inner ends of the struts 31 .are in-. sorted in suitable. radial openings'83 in a strut plate 34 that is mounted on the shaft 11, being positioned between'the top tension plate 26 and the yoke 20.
The tension plate 26 and the strut plate 34: have each an opening ."that admits the shaft 11 and each is supported against dropping downwardly by means of a pm that 18 passed through suitable openingsv in the i shaft.
,also provided.
I The two chain members 29 of a pair are positioned in slightly spaced relation at their upper ends where'they are connected with the hanger 80 and their lower ends are appreciably spread apart and connected to the body portion 37 of the gondola 27, whereby the gondola will-be directed substantially at right angles to the radius and will be adapted to move longitudinally or head-on. I At one end of the gondola 27 is 'a lightly constructed two-bladed propeller 38 that is mounted for rotation by means of a pin 39and at the other end thereof is arudder 4.0 of flat plate-likeform, and Wings; al ars 1-hSfSl1OWI1, the gondola 27 ismadeto repre- Sent an? ap ne and in i use the propell r 3 Will rotate. 7 p
The description given applies to a structure that is nearly two'feet high.
' chains 28.
'As details of construction, the tension plate 26- has perforations in the border ,por-
tion for receiving the upper endsof the short Also, thestruts 31 'abutby their inner ends against the aero shaft 11.
The hanger 30 is made of wire and the arm 82thereof is composed of the two ends of the wire, positioned inspaced relation,
and operative as spring members to engage with the opposed wallof the tubing of which the strut 31 is made.
The said hanger .30 is. of symmetrical form. The middle portion thercof is in,
the form of an upwardly directed loop 50 that receives the end link of the chainthat serves as the uppertension member 28 of the suspension device for the gondola. In-
termediat said middle portion 50 and the individual arms 51 that compose the double arm 32, on 'eaclrside, 1s a pendant loop 52 thatreceives the opposed upper ends 45 of one of the mating chain-'members 29 that proper for the correserve as the support spondinggondola? I claim as my nvention:w
1. In an aero swing, aboX-like base strucmounted thereon and spaced below saidtension plate, thrustrods extendingoutwardly from said'thrust plate, hangers at the outer ends of said rods, havmgeaclra'n upwardly directed loop, and having. each va pairof pendant hooks, tension lchainsj connecting said loops and saidtension plate, and a set of gondola devicesjhung individually-from saidhooks. v,
. In an aero swing as described in claim 1, said thrust rods being of. tubular form, and said hangers having arms for being entered within said rods.
3. In an aero 'swing as described'in claim 1, pins inserted through said" shaft and be- I low said tension plate and thrust plate serving as "the means for positioning said ten-g sion plate and thrust plate; l. In an aero swing asdescri'bedin claim 1,'sa1d thrust rods being of tubular form,
and said hangers being in the form 'of asinglepiece structure, with. a supporting finger'structure for being inserted in the'ends Of said thrust rods. k V i JOHN LEVANDER.
