To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that FRANK L. LINDs'rROM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved toy of that type which can be'made to move apparently automatically, with motions resembling those of live creatures.
The object of the invention is to provide a toy of the present character which will be extremely simple in construction and quite cheap to manufacture, and which will at the same time be of a practical, durable structure not liable to become impaired, whereby the toy may be capable of functioningfor a long period.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides and consists in the 7 novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts now to be fully described and later to be specifically claimed; it being understood that slight changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spiritof the invention and thescope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a toy embodying the features of theinvention;
Fig. 2 is a central sectional'view on an enlarged scale of the differential winding drum of the toy as seen in Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are each, respectively, a plan and a'sectional view of the several parts of vthe differential winding drum. 1
The toy of the present invention, as very clearly shown. includes a differential winding drum having cords attached thereto and so arranged that by pulling upon one cord 4 the toy will be made to move along the other cord, or by slacking the cords will return to its former position- That is, by grasping and holding one cord and pulling on the other cord, one cord will be wound upon the drum and the other will be unwound, the difierence in diameter of the two parts of the drum causing the toy. to progress along one of the cords. To obtain best results the cords are held approximately in vertical position, one being pulled up and the other down. By pulling on the ,cords the figure moves upwardly and by slackening the cords gravity will cause the figure to go down again. The present toy also includes, as is usual in the case of toys of the present type, meansfor operatingthe legs and arms of the toy as it moves up and down, so as to give the appearance that the legs and arms of the creature were moving, carrying the body.
Specifically, it is the aim of this invention to provide a novel and simple construction of difierential winding drum which can be formed of'a lesser number of parts than those now uponlthe market and thereby constructed at small expense, whereby the market price of toys of the present nature will be considerably reduced and a fair profit yet derived; and to provide simple and improved means for moving the legs and arms of the toy up anddown'as the drum is rotating.
Referring to the drawing 10 denotesthe body of the. toy which may'b'elmade to represent the body of an animal, fish, bird or the like. As shown, it represents a monkey having a head 11 and a tail 12.. Numeral 13 represents a jacket which may manner as by means of bent over lugs 14 and 15. y I
Within the body and acket is an enclosed housing, for a differential winding drum,
'main cylindrical body portion of the housing. A central depression 18 is formed in both the cup and cover, forming bearings for drum shaft "19 that extends through holes in said depression. The ends of this shaft are supported in sockets of the op-" posite sides of the body 10, and an enlarge ment 20 arranged intermediate the endsof the shaft is for the purpose of forming a shoulder to hold the drum against e'ndwise movement. This housing is constructed of a suitable grade of sheet metal andjtogether with the enclosed winding'drum foriiis a unit that can be secured in the'body in any manner as by means of lugs 21 struck from the be'secured upon thebody in any preferred base and cover and turned over and clamped against the edges of the body at the opposite sides. See Fig. 1.
The differential winding drum, like the housing, is constructed of the least possible number of parts, seven including the shaft, and is mounted to rotate upon the shaft 19 journaled in the before mentioned hearings in 18. This winding drum comprises a small pulley 22 and a large pulley 23 both vsecured together to turn as one. Each pulley is formed of three sheet metal stampings suitably shaped and secured together to form a rotatable unit.
The smaller cylindrical portion of the differential winding drum may be best described as the small pulley and the larger cylindrical portion as the larger pulley. The small pulley 22 is made up of a drawn cup like sheet 24 which includes an annular -cylindrical portion 25 and a base 26 having holes 27 therein ;to receive struck up lugs 28 of and for the attachment of a flat plate 29 that forms one of the annular flanges of the pulley. The annular edge portion of the smallfshell 24 includes a series of lugs 30 that extend through the holes 31 in the outer closure plate 32 that forms the outer flange of the small pulley. This plate is preferably provided with a, central stamped up bearing portion 33 in which a hole is formed to receive the shaft 19.
. The before mentioned flat plate 29, see
Fig. 5, is further provided with a series of three shouldered lugs 34 which are dis posed out at right angles, on the opposite side of the plate from lugs 28, and serve the double purpose of forming an eccentric bearing and for connecting the two pulleys together in spaced relation to each other. The shoulders of these lugs 34 obviously set up against the side of the adjacent flange plate 35 of the large pulley while the smaller end portions of the lugs are positioned in the holes 36 of the plate and holes 37 of the larger cup shaped member 38. This larger cup-includes a bottom por- .tion 39, a cylindrical pulley face 40 and an annular pulley flange 41 projected from the outer edge of the pulley to conform with the flange of the plate This plate 35 .is provided with a single lug 60 that is for the purpose ofengaging the hole 61 of the large pulley cup for further securing the two parts together. The outer side of the large cup 38 is enclosed by a shaped disk .42 which includes an annular flange 43 that fits into the cup and further includes a stamped up central portion 44having a hole thenethrough and forming a bearing on the shaft.
The twp pulleys are thus securedtogether .;to turn as one upon its shaft though are spaced apart by reason of the shouldered constructlon of the lugs 34 to provide room as to guide the movement all for the eccentric links 45 and 46 mounted upon said lugs which form a bearing for the ring portion of the links. Both of the pulleys are provided with flanges upon each side to better support the operating cords 47 and 48 wound thereon.
The three lugs 34 connecting the pulleys are located at different and suitable dis tances from the shaft 19 to serve as an eccentric for links 45 and 46 having pivotal connection as at 49 and 50 with the rock able crank-shafts 51 and 52 for operating the legs and arms 53 and 54 respectively. Numeral 55 denotesv pivots between the upper and lower parts of the legs and arms, respectively. The cord 48 is attached .to the large pulley and extends outthrough slot 56 in the housing and through holes 57 in the extremities of the arms. Cord 47 attached to the smaller pulley extends through a slot 58 in the housing and through holes 59 in the feet and tail so i of the toy along the line of the cord. Each of the links and 46 has a ring encircling the lugs 34 and the bodies of said links are freely slidable in the slots 62 of the housing, whereby when the drum is rotated in the housing and on the shaft 19 the links will cause the crank shafts to oscillate and swing the legs and arms thus producing movements of said legs and arms, guided by the cords, resembling those of live creatures.
Having thus fully described the. invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy of the character described, comprising a body and a differential winding drum mounted therein, said winding drum consisting of a pair 'of pulleys connected to turn with each other, and one of said pulleys consisting of a plurality of stampings including a cup shaped member having an annular pulley face and an integral bottomhaving a central perforation forming a bearing for the pulley, and a flange plate secured at the open side of said. cup shaped member and having a central perforation forming a second bearing for the pulley spaced from said first bearing, and a shaft supported by said body and engaging said bearings.
2. A toy of the "character describechcomprlsing a body. arm and leg members pivoty connected to the body and having cranks, adifferential winding drum Inounted to turn in the body, said drum consisting of a pairof spaced. apart sheet metalpulleys, a plurality of lugs struck from the side of one of the pulleys and connected to the side of the other pulley, to space and connect'them to turn one with the other, said lugs being arranged. in an eccentric circle about the axis of the pulleys to form a bearing, and a member comprising a ring portion engaging said bearing, and arm portions extended to connect with said cranks of said arms and legs to oscillate them.
3. A toy of the character described comprising a body having spaced apart sockets, a shaft having its opposite ends arranged in said sockets, an enlargement on said shaft and spaced from said body, a cylindrical housing having a peripheral and-side portions, said side portions having central apertured depressions pressed inwardly to- Ward each other, said housing mounted on said shaft, a differential "winding drum \vlthin said housing and including a pair of pulleys mountedat opposite sides of said enlargement, said differential Winding drum having oppositely d1sposed pro'tuberances engaging the depressions ofthefhousing,
whereby thrust bearings are provided for said differential Winding drum.

differential Winding drumupon said shaft and including a pair of pulleys arranged at opposite sides of said enlargement and between said depressions, one of sald pulleys consisting of a disc having a protuberance ing lugs secured to the fiat disc of the first mentioned" pulley.
5. A .toy as specified in claim 4:, wherein the lugs securing the pulleys to each other are arranged at difierent distances from the shaft, and links having rings and enveloping said lugs are provided and are pivotally connected With legs and arms, respectively, upon said toy for the purpose specified.
