Description

ENGINE VALVE Filed Dec.. 10, 1924 III a I gwumto; all/23w Patented Mar. 30, 1926.
T ENGINE VALVE/f,
Application. filed December 10, 1924.1;Seiia1No. 754,984..
To (HZ whom it mayc'oncern Be it known that 1, JAMES MOCU'MBER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingwood, in the county of Preston and State of \V est Viginia, have'invented a new and useful Engine Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to engine valves and aims to provide a novel form of valve. which will be noiseless n its operation, and
one wherein an air-tight connection between the valve and its seat will be insured at all times, eliminating leakage to increase the power of the engine;
An important obj eot of the'in'vention isto, provide a valve which will have a plurahty" of seats, the same being of a construction 7 whereby the explosion caused within the i cylinder will act to force the valve closer to its seat to eliminate leakage.
Another object of the invention is the pro:
vision of a valve constructed so that carbon deposits on the valvewill not in any way act to decrease the efficiency of the valve.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com} bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter .de
scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment 0f the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, wlthout departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: e Figure 1 is a fragmenta'l sectional view through the upper portion of an engine cylinder disclosing a valve constructed in accordance with the invention as mounted in the head thereof. a
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken at rightangles to Figurel.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the valve forming the essence of the invention.
Refering to the drawing in detail, the
reference character 5 indicates an engine cylinder in which the piston ,6 operates, the
cylinder and piston being of the usual type,
and forming no' part of thepresent 111VI1-.
' the'push rod27 is'provided with a'pin28' tion. l r
The engine head is indicated at 7 and is provided with the usual compartment 8 to accommodate the cooling fluid employed for maintainingthe engine in a cooled condition. This head is provided With recessed p rt e 9 f hich el g she n in th present drawing, which recessed portions accommodate the'valves formingthe essence. ofthe invention. As shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, a recessed portion is indicated at 9, the valve operating therein being indicated at 10, the same being hollow so that the foroe of the explosion usually directed to the under surface of'the head will bedirected' to the interior of the valve to force it to its seat.
The valve is formed witha tapered upper surface indicated at 11'to which the valve stem 12 1s secured and as shown, this upper portion 11 is provided with an eX- haust port 13 and an intake port 14, the exhaust and intake ports registering with the. exhaust and intake ports 15 and 16 re-' spectively, that are formed in the engine head, manifolds 17 being secured tofthe head for directing the fuel to the engine cylinders and directing the exhaust from the cylinders. 1
The reference character 18 indicates a peripheral flange which seats'at 19 to insure a tight connection at this point, while the upper tapered portion 11 of the valve seats at-20, to further insure a'tight'connection hetween the valve and the recessed portion in which it is positioned. 1 I
Mounted on the valve stem 12 is a coiled spring indicated at 21 that has its lower end bearing against the head of the cylinder while the oppositeend'thereof ispositioned in the cap 22 that is'held against movement on the valve stem by means of the pin 23. At the upper end of the valve "stem is an arm indicated at Q lwhich extends laterally and isengaged by the forked extremity 25' of the rocker arm 26 which is mounted in the usual manner, on the engine'head.
Contacting with the outer end of the rocker arm islthfusual push rod 27 that moves in vertical planes so that as the rocker arm 26 is moved upwardly, an oscillating movement will be imparted to 'thc valve proper, through the mediumof the arm 24..
In order thatthe rocker arm 2'6'will be returned to its initial position after it has been moved to op rate the valve member,
that moves in the'slot-29 From the foregoing it will be as "that due to thisconstruction an oscillatory movel .ment will be imparted to the valve to move he ietake, and ethane? p t's thereef alter nately-into vregistry With the intake and exhaustv portfeof the cylinder heacl to con.- trolt-he passage of fluid and exhaust gases having a recessecl portion and having inlet and exhaust openings formed: therein, a valve "including a circular body portion, having a peripheral flange, said flange having an inclined: upper edge, the lower edge of the walllof the recessed portion being beveled to receive the inchned upper edge at the tween the valve andflrecessed portion in which the valve operates,"and-'lneans for opmating. the valX "ei In testimony that I claim the foregoing V flange to provide a flu-id' -tight connection bcas my own I: have. hereto a-ffixed my signature.
