y embodying various structural features which will make the device sanitary, hygienic and safe in use.

i An important object is the provision of a device of this character formed inv the nature of a casing within which the pipe, cigar or cigarette is disposed and smoked, the casing having controllable air inet means whereby the rate of combustion of the tobacco may be regulated in a very simple and eflicient manner.

Yet another object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed as to .retain the ashes and prevent them from dropping onto the rugs, floor, furniture and the like or soiling the clothing of the smoker.

Yet-another object is the provision of a device of this character which may, if preferred, be equipped with forced draft means whereby to insure proper combustion of the tobacco even though it should be extremely moist to start with and diflicult to burn.

Yet another object is the provision of a device of this character in which the mouth piece is provided with a valve device which may be moved into cut-off position when it is not desired to smoke any longer or which may be turned into such position as to facilitate removal and replenishment of filtering material located therewithin.

The invention further contemplates the provision of various details of construction and arrangement which will make the device safe to use, neat and attractive in appearance, easy to operate, and a general improvement in the art.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, and especially to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, I have shown the device as comprising' an elongated cylindrical casingA designated generally by the numeral 10, which casing is represented as formed of two sections 11 and 12 telescopically engaged by a slip joint 13. The outer end of the section 11 is provided with an opening or a plurality of openings'14, the entire group of which is surrounded by an inwardly extending cylindrical flange 15 provided with perforations 16 located between two hood members 17 and 18, the former of which `closes the inner or open end of the flange member and the other of which is connected with the intermediate portion of the fiange member. The outer end of the section 11 is formed with a countersunk portion 19 located outwardly of the grou of holes 14, and rotatably mounted Within this countersunk portion is a plate or register 20 having openings 21 therein adapted-to be brought more or less into registration with the openings 14. This plate is shown aspivoted at 22 so as to be freely capable of rotation to cover or uncover the openings 14 to the desired extent.

The outer end of the section 12 is formed with an opening surrounded by an inwardly extending internally threaded flange 23, outwardly of which is located a cylindrical flange member 24 which likewise extends into the casing and which is provided with the top andbottom, respectively, of the endportion of the pipe. G6 is designed to cover the opening 65 and is held in place by a pair of turn buttons 69 screwed into suitable Ybosses 70 on the inside wall of the casing and having their heads disposable through elongated slots 71 in the cover plate and adapted to be turned f to extend transversely of kthese slots for effecting the securing action.

and the hood 74 extends in upwardly in-v clined direction from the intermediate portion of the flange member while the hood 75 forms a closure for the lower end thereof. The purpose of this structure is toadmit air to the interior of the casing for affording combustion of the tobacco within the 'pipe bowl, and the degree or amount of air is regulated by means of a rotatable ventilator plate-76 pivoted at77 and located within a countersink 78.

Extending Aacross the intermediate portion of the casing 62 at a point above that occupied 'bythe pipe are wall members 79 arranged lin spaced relation and communicating with a pluralitylof openings 80 in the wall of the casing. At their centers, the wall members 79 are formed with suitable openings within which is located a double conical flange device 81 of a hood like nature. Secured to the wall members outwardly of this central flange or hood 81 are other hood members 82, and between these hood members the walls 79 are formed with suitable perforations 83. Rotatably mounted within a recess or groove 84 in the outside wall of the casing is a band 85 having openings 86 adapted to be brought more. or less into registration with the openings 80 for regulating the inlet air. 1f desired, the ventilator plate 76 and the band member 85 may be adjusted separately or they may be equipped with the same or an equivalent connecting means as indicated in Figures 1 and 2.

The operation of this form of the device is of course very similar to that of the first described form, the operator smoking the pipe in the customary manner. If desired the type of valve device and filtering means within the bit may be used in connection with the pipe as with the cigarette and cigar holder, this detail being immaterial and "fnot being duplicated in Figure 7 as being unnecessary therein. 1t will be apparent that air for promoting combustion of the tobacco within the pipe mayenter through the openings in the top of the casing and also the openings in the sides thereof so that an adequate supply will be furnished.

1n Figures 9 and 10 1 have shown another form of the device in which provision is made for making a forced draft, this modification being particularly well adapted for, use when smoking tobacco which is very damp and which is not inclined to burn freely. Referring to these figures, the numeral 87 designates a casing which may correspond to the casing 62 and which may be provided with the same or some similar means for holding apipe therein, this detail not being illustrated in this view. Depending from the top portion'of this casing is a cylindrical flange member 88 arranged in surrounding relation to a group of openings 89 regulated bymeans of a rotatable ventilator or damper plate 90 provided with openings 91 which may be brought more or less into registration with the openingsr 89. The. member 88 carries upper and lower hoods 92 and 93 and between the points of connection of these hoods Vwith the member 88'the latter is formed with perforations 94 for the passage of air. Extending axially of the member 88 is a tubular guide 95 within which is slidably mountedy an upwardly spring pressedplunger 96 having a suitable operating head 97 and carrying a spiral 98 movable through a slot 99 in the lower end of the guide, the arrangementv being such that when the plunger is forced downwardly the spiral will rotate. 1t should also be stated that the lower end of the spiral member is engaged within a transverse bearing 100 which extends across the casing. Near this bearing the spiral carries afan 101 which will be rotated when the plunger is moved and which will therefore create a suction through the air inlet openings and consequently supply a forced draft to the pipe being smoked so as to insure combustion of the tobacco therein regardless of how damp it may be. Obviously, a ratchet mechanism 102 is provided whereby to insure rotation of the fan always in the same direction.

From vthe foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simply constructed and highly hygienic and sanitary smoking device for use either in connection with cigars, cigarettes or a pipe, the arrangement being such that the minimum quantity or proportion of nicotine can get into the system of the user.

Another point of advantage is that ashes are caughtv and cannot drop onto the floor or the clothing of the smoker.

lVhile 1 have shown and described the prefer'ied embodiment ot the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make suoli changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not departroin Vthe spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

l. A device of the character described comprising a casing formed in its periphery With openings at different points, bands surrounding the casing at said points and rotat-able with respect thereto, said bands having openings adapted to be brought more -or less into registration with said first named openings, and a yoke member having its end portion pivoted upon the ends of the casing and having its intermediate portion connected With said band members for moving the saine simultaneously.

2. In a device of the character described, a casing provided in its periphery with a plurality of openings, ring-like partition members within the casing at opposite sides of the openings therein, a double conical member located Within and secured to said ring-like partition members, band surrounding the casing at said openings and provided with openings adapted to brought into registration therewith and means for rotatingl the band.

3. In a device ot the character described, a casing provided at one end With an inwardly extending sleeve provided with perforations, means for controlling the inlet ot air to said sleeve, and a pair ot conical detending froin the intermediate portion there-k of in spaced relation to the former, the portion of the sleeve between the conical members being perforated.

4. A device of the vcharacter described comprising a casing formed of detachably connected sections, said sections being provided at their ends with regulable air inlet openings, the casing being provided interL mediate its ends with pairs ot' Walls corninunieating` through openings With the a-tinosphere, Lange members extending through said Walls, and a cigar or cigarette holder detachably mounted Within the end portion or". one section and extending into the casing.

5. In a device ot the character described, a casing, regulatable air inlet means at one end thereof, a rotary fan journaled Within the casing at a point inwardly of said air inlet means, and means extending through said air inlet means for eiecting rotation ot' the fan.
