J. J. HYNES VENTILATI ING DEVICE FOR MITTENS AND GLOVES Filed April 6, 1925 /0722 cffijizes WITNESS:
A'ITORNEY Patented Mar. 23, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. HYNES, F MAPLE GROVE, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES M. DALY, OF ONEILL, NEBRASKA.
VENTILATING DEVICE FOR MITTENS AND GLOVES.
Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. HYNns, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Maple Grove, in the county of Holt and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Devices for Mittens and Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a ventilating device or devices for a mitten or glove, and one which is especially intend ed for heavy mittens made of rubber or rubberized fabric.
A further object is to provide a mitten or glove with a plurality of apertures on the back, or on the wrist portion or both. and to provide a shield member for preventing the entrance of foreign material, without interfering with the ventilating effect.
A still further object is to provide a glove or mitten with an elastic wrist portion, preventing the entrance of water or dirt around the wrist of the wearer, and providing indirectly for suction, due to the movement of the hand, so that there may be increased circulation of air.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view. the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invcntio In the drawings.
Figure 1 shows the back portion of a mitten with my improvement applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a section through the guard 12 of Figure l and through the apertured portion of the back;
Figure 3 is a similar section on another plane;
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the guard. with the aperturea portion of the back in plan;
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views, in elevation and section res Jectively showing the guard used adjacent to the wrist portion;
Figures 7 to 9 are detail views of another form of guard.
Gloves and mittens of rubber and the like are usually of light weight material and unsuitable for heavy work. In the present instance the intention is to provide an article of heavy weight which shall be fully ventilated, and an article whlch may be used 1923. Serial N0. 630,290.
without discomfort and without unpleasant effects of any kind.
The back portion 10 of a mitten is provided with apertures 1.1 of suitable size and number, and in order to protect the apertures and prevent the entrance of dirt. a shield or guard 12 is provided, this guard having a partly rounded or convex surface, and being open at one end. This device will be arch shaped, in cross section, and the open end will be toward the wrist, in any form in which the device is employed. The edges are cemented to the back of the glove, leaving how ver the open end specified. and a type of reinforcement is thereby provided.
It is not essential that the element 12 be of the form shown, as it may be flat, as illustrated in Figure 7, and also in Figures 8 and 9, and have three straight edges secured by cement to the back 10 of a glove or mitten. The guard is here designated 12.
In Figure 5, I have shown a channel shaped guard 14: to be mounted over a series of openings 15 at the side of the wrist portion of the mitten, or on both sides. as may be preferred. The usual open end is provided for the guard.
A wrist band 16 .serves to reinforce the wrist portion, and to permit of bringing the said portion of the glove or mitten intd imirediate contact with the wrist of the wearer. thereby providing an air tight connection and a forced circulation of air. due to com- 'iression, as the hand is manipulated incident to the work being performed. An elastic insert is shown at 16 as extending partlv beneath the guard and also beneath the wrist band.
il hat is clainiez'l 1. A mitten provided with openings near the wrist portion for ventilation, a guard ertending over the onenias and an elastic wrist band formed irtegrallv with the bodv portion of the mitten. I I
A mitten including a wrist portion 6K pausible around the wrist of the wearer and adapted to contract therearound, said mitten having openings for ventilation adjacent to the wrist portion, and a guard extendii over the openings, said guard being open at the end toward the wrist portion and having its sides and opposite end closed. a
In testin'iony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN J. HYNES.
